You have some *great* options near by that won't require much travel time - and more importantly - a lot of money.

Indonesia is (a) far away and would be an expensive flight but more importantly (b) it is NOT a place for beginners. The waves are hollow, powerful, and break over reef which will cut you badly if you fall. Costa Rica has some beginner-friendly surf spots but it could be expensive to get to. here. Prior to the Tsunami I would have also recommended the
Maldives but we'll all have to just wait and see how this small island country recovers.
Since you are a beginner, I would focus on surfing more of the areas close to your home. The last thing you want to do is spend a TON of money to travel far away, where you may or may not get good waves, and have to deal with all the logistics of traveling abroad.
