I was looking through some pics of fishes and saw a few unglassed ones and it got me to thinking, Isnt it interesting how little personaility a board has before its glassed. No color, no shine, just a dull white deck that is useless without its fiberglass shell. It has no persona yet, which will be defined by its colors, fins, and finish.

My .02 for the day.

Glassing seems more like in engineering exercise...follow the sequence, don't deviate....
Shaping is almost an art form, you lead with your thoughts.
My shapes started getting good around #14.
My glassing was solid by #7.....much easier to master!
But you need both to be the complete package <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

And just to add to my little dissertation that nobody responded to, a nice glass job can make a dull board look incredibly cool. People talk about shapin, shapin, shapin, but there really should be more talk about glassin. There is not enough credit given to it.

Just my .02

I know you were attempting to say something smart, but in the end supported exactly what I said.

Yes but you fail to understand the conecpt of what you are saying. In a painting, the main aesthetic element is the painting itself and the frame merely encases it. But on a surfboard, the shape as well as the airbrush, pinlining, and glassing is the painting and actually does not have a "frame" so to speak. Unless you put it on a wave.

both offer just as much oppurtunites to get creative, both are equally important. look at all of tfads threads where almost everyone on the bb has oohed and awed and given mad props to the glassers for the beautiful job they do. granted, most people who buy off the racks may not appreciate a good glass job, but those are the same people who appreciate a good logo rather then a good shape too.

To some, the shape is the soul of the board. But even the greatest artists have to eat, to work, and to poop, so the shape needs to be glassed.
To others, the outer beauty is everything, the first emotional torrent washing over your mind, the sheer stimulus of emotions, desires, wants, and needs.
Obviously, a combination of the two is not the worst idea.
Do we look for beauty within, or beauty on the outside?

normally i dont look for beauty within on surfboards...its all white foam.

my last board was white. very white. i rushed on it and didnt want to paint it. and sinc ei used s glass and epoxy didnt want to tint it. durring the last hurricane i got super board and drew on it. this is what it ended up... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shrug.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Actually, not plagerwhatever....
I was watching the Giants shoot themselves, my g/f trying to persuade me to sing (backup) with the band, and I was hoping for a break in work so I could go to a convergence in BigSur this weekend.
Alas, nothing worked, I'm still here, have to work this weekend.
I'm an old fart so sometimes come up with amusing stuff to say.

I like glassing my boards. It's actually my favorite part of the process....It's also the most frustrating, most time consuming, and when all is said and done, the most satisfying...
