Im in college, and my dad said if i got b+ average for the whole year he would let me take a trip to hawaii(like pay for it).
But should i go there? Or is there somewhere else that would be better to go(i want a surf trip obviously)?
Indo? Puerto Rico? ...? lol
Hawaii has always seemed like a dream place that ive ALWAYS wanted to go to... so what do u guys think?

from down there, live up here
i'd be a lie to tell you that hawaii is not a super cool place, BUT, there are plenty of other places i'd rather go (but i've already been to hawaii before, 3x). i'd rather go to costa rica and it's pretty comprable in price. i'd rather go to indo and kick it at bali for a couple of weeks. i'd rather go to south africa. i'd rather go to oz.

but i really like hawaii so who knows?

best time in *our* Summer? (May to September) - easy choice: Bali. relatively cheap, consistent surf, and plus you'll get the experience of visiting a foreign country and learning their culture/language/people.

2nd choice: Central America (Pacific Coast). Costa Rica, Panama, or Nicaragua.

You can easily find plenty of information on any of these locations if you just search the web for it.

hey
how good do you have to be do surf indo?

I can do all the basics, like bottom turning really well(as in basically going 180 degrees), but im no pro. dont want to surf really shallow reefs or anything yet.

Honestly kid, it doesn't sound like you are ready for Bali or Indonesia especially if you don't have experience in reef breaks. Plus - I think Bali can be pretty crowded at the more popular spots and if you aren't comfortable in jostling for waves, that might throw you off. I'd hit Central America first and see how you do there for starters. Costa Rica is *easy*: tourist friendly, U.S. dollars accepted, and many spots that are easy to handle regardless of your skill level.

well how do u know ur ready?

how do u measure the skill level you need?

btw ive been planning for costa rica.. but i planned for the cheap uncomfortable hotels and *****.... lol.. and if my parents are paying i dont want to stay in air conditioned places, so ill have to look thru the guide again.

by the way.. i was thinking of staying at PLAYA HERMOSA.
watchu think?
also im a goofy foot.

as ive said ive already researched costa rica through Mike Parise's book "The surfers guide to costa rica"
I think the central coat is my best bet for good beach breaks (not ***** i have to take a boat to get to or where reef booties.

What do you guys think of boca barranca? The book said its murky and Very easy to get infections, but it has great waves....?

Also what about Dominical? Its supposed to be heavier than Dominical.. do u think i should avoid it?

The one place i hope to score is Pavones.

i still feel like i should take advantage of this since im not paying.

hmm well i could either go to CR and actually stay in air conditioned hotel/cabinas.

Or hawaii? I know the north shore of oahu is not good for summer. So is there anywhere u suggest?
OR do u still think i should just go to CR?

Or go to hawaii...

i think you should spend more time worrying about getting that B average instead of planning a trip that might not even happen if you don't. my $00.02....

I'll add to the votes for Costa. Great way to get your feet wet with international travel. Easy to get around, lots of English speakers, currency is easy to deal with, etc., but you still get a taste of a foreign country. Great assortment of breaks too, so you can go as easy or heavy as you want, and your board(s) from home will be OK there. Plus Dad's money goes a long way there compared to Hawaii, so maybe you can work in a new board or two as well.

I haven't been to the central or southern areas, but the Guanacaste coast has a lot of great breaks and great places to stay. There's a ton of info out there, and the book you already have is spot-on with its info.

are those companies like waterways a lot cheaper than planning your own trip?

its nice to have the freedom to roam

i guess the main question is still:

Hawaii vs. Costa Rica

CR would be great but... i just might feel regretful of not going to hawaii lol. since ive NEVER been

Maybe ill just leave hawaii for later when i get really good (so i can surf the north shore...pipeline etc)

SO... isnt the central pacific the best for our summer time? I mean i know the swells are good for there come in our summer... so i think it would be better then the north pacific (Guanacaste....Tamarindo,Playa grande, witches)

Also pricing... how does WATERWAYS get their plane tickets so cheap..
They give u the car and plane ticket all for freakin 650-800 dollars.

If i plan the trip myself can i get it for that cheap? i know cars are like a good 400 dollars... and the plane tickets all seemed to be like 600 dollars+

The boards are cheap in CR right? do u think i should just buy one there and then sell it when i leave? Instead of paying for the shipping of MY board(or does waterways cover that? i thnk they had a notice that said they didnt).

Heres the link for the CR pricing from waterways http://www.waterwaystravel.com/costarica/Pricing.html

Also how much would a full week in Hawaii cost? so i can try to weasil in a free board from my dad with the extra money to cr as mentioned earlier ;P.
