Hello I'm a little over 6'2" and 177 lbs. I have been riding a 6'2 and a 6'3 shortboard. I was told today by an older surfer that also shortboards that i should be riding a longer shortboard according to my height and weight to be able to improve more. He recommended at least a 6'6". Is this right?

i dont agree with going longer just cause your a littl heavier. I weigh 160 and am 5'10" and ride a 5'2" and 5'4" regularly. The shorter board really helps alot, its alot easier to throw it around. at almost 180, if you were in good shape you could easily ride a 6'0" with thicker rails and flatter rocker.

if yor just beginning, id go with a board with mroe volume, not just more length. Like a roudn nosed fish.

it really depends on what ur surfing. if ur on some powerufl wave u could easily get away with low 6's. if ur surf weak florida mush...ud prob want a few more inches and atleast 19 wide.

depends where ur at

I'm almost exactly your size... maybe a half inch smaller. Here's an idea of the size of boards I ride:

I just ordered a 6'4" x 18 5/8" x 2 3/8" board that I'm planning on using in waist high to overhead good surf. Right now I have a 6'4" x 19 1/4" x 2 3/8" board that is great for knee high to overhead mushy surf. I also have a 6'7" x 18 5/8" x 2 7/16" board for overhead to double overhead waves.

A 6'6" would definitely work for you. I think you can get away with a 6'4" just fine too. Personally, I would get the 6'4" a bit wider than the 6'6".
