Okay in the last few days I have seen several different organizations come out against the interrogation tactics being used by the US against Al Qaeda detainees in Cuba and Afghanistan. Now I consider myself to be a moderate but Al Qaeda was responsible for 3000 people dying in a matter of minutes these people were either singed alive in jet fuel, crushed to death, or jumped to certain death to escape the previous. The people that orchestrated these horrific events do not deserve human rights. I would be in full support of cruel barbaric torture for Al Qaeda members. I read somewhere that the Guantanamo bay detainees are even allowed to practice their faith...I would think the cruelest punishment for religous zealots would be to rob them of their faith.

Parkside, son! What!?
Part of me says "We're Americans. We have to be better, no matter what."
Another, louder part says, "Fvck 'em. Put their heads on sticks."

You know, card-carrying liberal that I am, I kinda want to agree with that too. But then when I'm faced with ethical questions like this or the death penalty, I fall back to asking myself what I'd be capable of if I were there? Could I toture someone? The answer for me is no (unless it's "pleasurable torture"), therefore I can't advocate doing anybody else doing it, especially in the name of my country.

Plus I don't really want to add any more to the list of reasons they'd have to hate us. Not that it probably makes much difference at this point...

we're at war with the Al Qaeda. they declared war first. unfortunately, that declaration wasn't taken too seriously and not wasn't really broadcasted to the American people until it was too late. War ain't pretty. If it means keeping a POW up for days and barely feeding him, then that's what it takes. We probably wouldn't have caught the #3 Al Qaeda guy unless we were tough on the POW Al Qaeda members.

I'd like to know how American Vietnam POW'ers feel about the Al Qaeda POW's being held in Cuba and Afghanistan.

I think they're calling it "tormenting" ...no heat, elevator music, lots a psychological crap...

whatever they're calling it I'm fine with it, especially if info about future attacks are garnered

the problem is that some of the people in guantanamo are innocent. I don't remember the percentage, but I read an article about the situation a while back, and the estimated percentage of innocent people there was surprisingly high. Technically, legally, the US government has the right to kill them, since they're not POWs, they're illegal combatants. But ethics and international law are two different things entirely.

Good points by all, it is tough situation I personally feel that all terrorists(including homegrown wackos like Mcveigh) lose all rights but I do agree that as Americans we should set higher standards.

What about this Khalid Mohammed guy who they say is the key architect behind 9/11??? What if he they could potentially thwart a terrorist plot if he talks?? Would torture be justified???

It's funny, you know.

This subject.

I was in this sandwhich shop having lunch the other day and this older conservative looking guy maybe in his late 50's was reading the newspaper and out of nowhere he looked at me and pointed to the picture of that fugly terrorist guy they recently caught and said to me:

"they should poke that bastards eyes out and then torture and kill him"

I was stunned.

I'm really not sure where I stand when it comes to torturing terrorists but I'm convinced we should torture the french

We don't torture...it's all about the drugs now. Torture creates more disinformation than usable information, they'll tell whatever they think that the torturer wants to hear.
For a guy like Khalid, not being a hardcore field guy but a planner from a well to do family, the sight of a Moussad agent would make him crap his pants...
Are drugs legal in the interrogation of prisoners under the Geneva Convention? Are they even covered by the Geneva Convention? I don't even know..

Well the middle east people have no problem with torture. My history teacher was telling me how they would torture people more or less for the fun of watching them die by sending the torturee down a slide with razors running the length of the slide on each side. The person would essentially be sliced to death. I dont see why we cant torture them to get info.
