there are heaps in Byron Bay. Lonely Planet has much better lists than I could ever find on the internet - and I think you can even get a 'Lonely Planet - NSW' (I had one for Queensland while I was there)

forgot to mention - rather than looking up 'hostels' on the internet (which tends to give you the more expensive places) just Google the city you're going to visit. For example: www.byron-bay.com and click on their accomodation. It gives the best list of hostels I could find on the net.

if you want to stay in manly beach (sydney) then the "manly backpackers" is alright. Location is absolutely prime, the beach break down the street is super fun and if you just take the bus or walk up to clearwater (the next cove up) it gets even better. Good luck man.
