These were updated before the devastating tsunami, so we will have to see how the estimated 10-foot increase in the ocean bottom near Sumatra has changed the surf spots. Also, a few accomodations in Northern Sumatra are different since the devastation.

We will keep you posted as the surf season approaches in early spring.

The earthquakes and tsunami caused major damage in the offshore islands from Nias north (Banyak Islands and Simeulue especially). Lagundri Bay was relatively protected, but the west coast of Nias saw villages destroyed. Asu and Bawa were flooded, but no major damage to buildings. The Mentawai islands further south are all OK.

The mainland Aceh surfspots have been totally devastated (Meulaboh and Lloh Nga), although these areas were rarely visited by surfers due to the long civil war in Aceh. There have been over 60 smaller earthquakes since the big one.

The southern Sumatran mainland is OK, as is Java, Bali and all the eastern islands.

The best thing surfers can do to help the Aceh people is to continue taking Mentawai yacht tours, especially to the northern islands, or stay at mainland southern Sumatra surf spots.
