Fish? Hybrid? Some explanation needed - I want to round out my quiver

I have 4 boards right now:

6'0" rounded squash
6'4" rounded squash
6'6" rounded pin
7'0" mini gun pin tail

I'm looking for a board that is purely a "toy" board; something that I can use merely for fun. Ideally, this board would be really quick, fast, be able to turn on a dime as most of the waves I get to surf are in Florida (weak beach breaks). A board that I can experiment with is partly what I'm seeking as I want to push myself in terms of my surfing as well as have many different boards for different occasions/conditions.

I've heard about Fish boards and Hybrids but I'm not sure I know the difference in the two. Perhaps one of these types of boards would be good for me? I'm a pretty good surfer despite my geographic location and see this as one of the next steps in maturing as a surfer...any thoughts/advice.

Feel free to ask questions as I know I've been pretty vague here...

Just bought a Rusty '84 because it looks like the boards that the guys who inspired my style of surfing were riding(Curren, Occy, Hardman, etc). It is an 80's shortboard with a modern bottom configuration (single concave going into a light V with a double concave and a tiny V behind the last fin). I, too, wanted to round my surfing experience. I surf a potato chip 6'2 in everything from knee to over head. I want this new board to be my new all around board. I see a lot of potential in it.
Will post once I get to ride it (tomorrow). Will take it out in the N swell we are supposed to get.
BTW, Fish is a wide term these days. The original was twin fin and very short and stubby. Nowadays, almost anything with a swallow tail, a little extra width and less length is dubbed a "fish". A Hybrid can be anything from a wide shortboard to an egg shape.
My verdict to you is, get something that looks and feels right under your arm and don't be afraid to think outside the box. It will keep you from becoming stale and will make you a better surfer.

this sounds like a cool idea to fool around with. an old 70's style fish, but with wings 16" up from the tail so it would be a sting fish, then put a single box in it. sounds like it would be fast and curvy.

Hey
All those ideas are cool.
I hate to be caught up in a "nomenclature" war, so I'd rather know the dimensions, the shape, the rocker, and where it's located rather than go with a simple "XXXXname" for a certain kind of shape.
I think we all should spend some time to udnerstand rockers, bottom shapes, rail shape and size, what it does, and all that theory crap so we can just order our next board exactly the way we want it. If we don't know, no biggee, the shape generally has a good idea what works for most surfers.
There are countless variations you can do with a simple surfboard shape, so any one of them will change the characteristics a little. So.....forget about it, just go surfing!
Unless you want to spend the money, invest the time, to gain more knowledge so's you will finally understand that you don't really know nearly as much as you would ever want to.
Put into better words by a sage here (who recently went to Oahu and surfed Velzyland).

diroberts,
if u live in Georgia, i am assuming u surf gerogia and northern florida. i am positive u dont sure nice, perfect, head high glass constantly while in florida.
as others were saying, u might want to round it off with a "fish"....use this loosely as posted.
by fish theres a couple different shapes i would chose if i were you. A short stubby little twinfin, great for speed, and is definately different than your regualr shorrtboards. Or, as i posted earlier, a modern snub nose fish. if you are into buyign from big brands, Lost makes a really cool snub nosed fish. i had the chance to ride one in jacksonville and it took the waves like it was built for it. that would probably be my top choice if i were in your shoes. as soemtimes riding a singlefin, or a twinfin, can be whole nother style. but if a whole nother challenge is what your looking for....

hi diroberts, I live in Peru and the surf here is pretty good so hybrids and fishes are not usually used, but however I have a CI Sashimi which I have tried in the conditions you are probably surfing, and it works like hell. You should consider buying one or get a local shaper to make you one similar to it

Might as well have the right board (and some practice on it) when one travels to such breaks. Anyway, FL does occasionally get surf big enough to use a gunnier board in the 7'0" (especially if the rider is anyone of larger stature- larger defined as man-sized rather than skinny-pre-pubescent-kid sized) just like pretty much anywhere on the east coast. No need to sell that board.

I believe that fish, hybrids and fun boards are anything that isn't a sharp nosed shortboard template, has a little width or has a swallow tail. They've turned into catch all phrases that I know a lot of the older guys don't agree with...
Still, they are a great alternative for smaller waves, more volume foam wise, flatter rocker and a loosey goosey feel may inspire you to paddle out when the potato chips just won't perform as well...

i can understand why - upon a gut reaction - you would say that but given my current location, i fly to places that have larger surf and therefore need a mini-gun. (i'm going to Central America in February and then Australia and Bali later this year). i've even used my 7'0" for hurricane surf in Central Florida; the swells in September generated waves with 10ft. faces!

[edit: i found this 'fish' just today. this seems like it is mad crazy fun. fo shizzy off the hizzy! ]
