I take it thats yours?

I've never ridden an E-5 longboard, but I've heard a number of people give them the title of 'The best longboard I ever rode.'

Technically, its my wife's Although after riding it a few times I've got a hankering to sell off my cooperfish and replace it with about a 9'8" x 23 1/4" version of this board.

Its like buttah. As smooth and natural as a good yater, but faster, and a little tracky (which is fine in a longboard). Smoooooooth on cutbacks.

Actually, she's doing great on it. A huge upgrade for her from an 8'6" x 21 3/4" x 2 3/4" thin railed over rockered wrongboard. Now she's catching waves like crazy. I probably won't ride it *much* since I do so much damage to decks.

The price was *lower* than most of the good local longboard shapers, and frankly, this is a cleaner shape. Malcolm is a great shaper.

There was a 7'2" x 19" bonzer5 gun with a micro-swallow that I was drooling over in a huge way ... just an amazing shape ... then john says "oh, that ones not for sale ...". A good thing, really.

Bonzers are a unique thing. I believe the side fins mostly just funnel water into the deep double concaves through the tail. They also add some bite. Pretty much a supercharged single fin with more grip.

If you search for "bonzer" in this forum you should be able to find lots of info on them.

Don't forget crazy accelleration and incredible top-end speed!

Very neutral handling too. As for the trackiness, play around with fin position a bit and report back to us - I'll be interested to see how your experience with the Red-X's on a longboard compare with my very positive experience on my Bonzer shortboard.

I've been riding my gunny, mini-swallow 6'8" Bonzer for the last few days in well-overhead reef surf. All I can say is that I'm in love. Seriously. I cannot believe how fast the board is. I've loaned it to other surfers who didn't like the way it comes off the top compared to a thruster, but I love the way the board handles. It has a totally unique feeling of CONTROLLED speed. I'm doing the best cutbacks of my life on it, too.

I find the single-fin comparison pretty interesting. I describe the way it handles as being kinda like a turbo-charged single fin, with more bite and control. I dunno. I really dig it. So much so that I'm gonna head up to Haleiwa this weekend to try to find Duncan to pick his brain about getting another for an everyday shortboard closer to the dimensions that I usually ride.

Is this a thread hi-jack? Not really. I'm just saying that not getting your hands on that 7'2" could hardly be called a "good thing."

Its a good thing because I'm in california and I still havn't gotten the 7'2" Matt made me in the water yet, and it is every bit as sick as that malcolm was. I need another semigun like I need a hole in the head!

A mid length bonzer would have been unreal at a couple spots on the big island. If you get tired of the oahu crowds in Jan or Feb grab a hopper over I'll tell ya how to find the good spots.

So speaking of thread hijacks ... how's oahu treating you? Lately I've been wondering if I'd have been happier there than the big island ... since theres real work for me and a little more civilization.

I told you you'd be stoked you kept that thing.

Whenever I loan my Bonzers to friends they always fall off the back on the their first off the lips. You get very used to the way thrusters have that stop and stick feeling in the lip and we've all learned to compensate. If you read early 80's surf mags that was a complaint about the thruster. If you watch under water footage of thrusters you can plainly see that effect. The early 90's Momentum surfers really ran with that stopping effect and pushed the tails into a slide with great visual results.
Bonzers will swoop through the lip and accelerate. Once you get used to that feeling it's very addictive. And yeah...those boards are all about the cutback. I'm stoked to hear you guys are stoked.

Life on Oahu is great, so far. Although with law school I kinda feel like I'm looking through the wrong end of a telescope at the rest of the world. It's so easy to develop total tunnel vision and lose all track of the rest of the world. It's pretty tough to break yourself out of the law school routine. Surfing is good because it forces me to slow down for at least a couple of hours.

There are probably 15 breaks within walking distance of our apartment, but I surf the same one 80% of the time. Two way peak. Most guys want the right. I'll take the lefts. And the occasional right, too.

I love it here, but at the same time I can tell that it wouldn't be for everyone. Hopefully when I'm done with school, we can figure out a way to live on the North Shore.

Another Bonzer Story: Yesterday, I caught a wave with about an 8-foot face. There was a guy floundering around on the inside, not catching waves, but getting in everyone's way. Well, he was in my way when I went to drop in and he paddled in front of me for the shoulder. I had to go around him and wound up in the flats with no speed with the lip about to crush my head. On a thruster, I'd have never made the wave.

Somehow, on the Bonzer, I pulled up into the pocket, accelerated in an instant, and shot out of the tube. I still don't know how I got that MUCH speed THAT quickly. Anybody know so they can tell me how to do it again?

Sorry to continue the the hijack. But I rode my 7'8" ewing at Tamaracks two weeks ago or so in about head high and I am still amazed by the feel and how fast a board that length board can turn
