I have a few ideas on how I might create an adapter to put my futures center fins in my 10.5" center boxes, but they all seem like they'd be more easily implemented if I had an intact fin base from a broken fin to work off of.

So.

Does anyone here have a base from a busted fin that they've been hanging on to "just in case" that they'd be willing to part with in the name of research for little or no compensation? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> How's that for an offer you can't refuse?

Thanks guys,
Shwuz

That's actually a good idea! FCS fins seem pretty cheap and plentiful, so with an adaptor I could have a veritable plethora of fin options! Although I had hoped to keep everything Futures, since that is what I have already. And if I sawed down a futures fin to fit into fcs plugs it probably wouldn't work for futures boxes anymore... I could make my own, like you do chip... But then I may as well just cut out the middleman and shape the fins to fit FU boxes to begin with...

Here is the biggie.... Would it be less work to make an adaptor to fit Futures into FU boxes, or to make an entirely new fin to fit the FU box?

Here's the real motivation for not making my own hand-laid, hand-foiled centerfin: 11 stitches. After an encounter between my leg and a glassed on fin, I became a rock-solid adherent to Proteck fins (although I will have to make an exception when I make my bonzer) . The smallest Proteck fin for FU boxes that they make is 7". Thats perfect for my 2+1 setup, but just a little big for thruster. I have a full set of 4.5" thrusters with the proteck edges already, but in Futures... So, you see my dilemma.

go to www.surfcohawaii.com and check out their testimonial page to understand my reasoning for my now-and-forever fin choice. See if you can spot my story (and the beast of a board that tried to end my days of surfing).

Back to the mission at hand: I have two ideas for this project...
1. Shave down a Futures box to correct width, add fiberglass on bottom to increase depth and provide anchor points for screw and pin.
2. Shave futures center box into minimum drag (but still functional) shape, then glass that onto existing FU fin base so bottom of Futures box sits flat against board bottom when in use.

Thoughts?

The problem with fin adapters is stack tolerances. None of the fin systems have as snug a fit of their fins to their boxes as Red X does. Now you add an adapter and you just doubled how poorly they fit. All the adapters do is double the gaps.

did you save your foam scraps from your board? If so you can carve out your own fins out of foam and glass them wiht glass scraps left over. ITs really cheap and gives something to do for a while. And you can make fins you would never be able to get other wise.

Yeah, still the problem with the hard edges, though... Call me a wuss, but I think I'd rather find a way to fit my protec thruster center into the FU box.

The question that was brought up about the fit is an interesting one, though. An adaptor would create one more joint where the fin could wiggle... I'll figure out something, hopefully.

you cuuld dip a fins leading and trailing edges in the same rubber they put on tools, i know you can buy it at home depot. It would tyake away the sharp edge deal but keep the good fiberglass flex.

Fin Thing

One day, I broke two fin tabs...

I might break one every couple years, but two in one day...???...

The solution for the busted tab thing is SO simple...

It's been the weak point of any non-all fiberglass fin...

Frustrating me for years...

And the time to get that fiberglass tab just right...

Grrrr...

I made it out of 1/8" angle aluminum...3/8' wide x 7/8" high x 1.5" long...

The attachment is the strongest I've had with wood fins...

It's a keeper...!!!...

It's funny how the best solutions are often the simplest...
