Hi,
Has anyone out there had the neck vertebrae fusion proceedure and returned to surfing? How did it work? How's it going.
Thanks,
Bob Fleckenstein,
Lancaster, Ca.

Surfing after fusion. Sure you could do it. Probably most orthopedic and neuro surgeons would say no. Most fusion are done to alleviate pain. Surfing could aggravate that condition. It would probably have to be taken on a case by case basis.

Just east of Malibu....
I broke C2 vertabrae in my neck surfing the day after Thanksgiving. I've had 3 operations so far, but fusion hasn't taken place yet. Hopefully soon otherwise I'll need to get C1,C2, and C3 fused. My neurosurgeon is a surfer and he says I should be in the water again either way. Maybe with just slightly less neck mobility. Can I use that as an excuse to drop in on people now?

Out on a limb here, but I seem to recall that former pro Richard Woolcott broke his neck at Natividad back in the late 80's (I remember cause I also went there soon after). Last I heard, he's now one of the big cheeses at Volcom, and I believe he made a return to surfing, though not as a pro. Might try looking him up for info/advice.

Maybe more importantly though: What would any self-respecting surfer be doing living in Lancaster!?!

Sorry to hear of your accident, sounds like your in pretty good hands. The one thing I don't understand is that Neuro surgery seems like it has to do with the brain, spinal cord, and the system of nerves. Seems like a vertabrae has to do with the spinal column and orthopedics.
Anyway, check out this website (www.espineinstitute.com) and a Doctor Kraph in Santa Monica. He's really good; their getting into these new artificial disc implants and you can learn about proceedures they do. He's $125 a visit, takes Blue Cross, and maybe you could show him your stuff just for a second opinion.
Bob Fleck.

O I got a job out here; its the self-respecting part I have trouble with, just kidding.
Hey Bill, did you know Michel Junod, Mike T, Bill Hayten and those guys when you lived on the Nort Shore in the seventies ?
Anyway, thanks alot for the reply.
