Hi everyone,

Not sure if I will find an answer to this but does anyone have experiences sudden lower back pain in the spine when popping up ? i have been down the road of chiro, mri, x ray, physio for over a year now and can't really fix it (it got better but not to the point where i can bend my back pain free). I can go to the gym and do it all (except too much squats obviously) as long as i keep my back very straight it s all good.
When surfing obviously we need to go from a paddle position to a stand up position, and your spine need to brutally bend when popping up, doing this feels like i m being stabbed in the spine.

Anyone every experienced that ? if yes how did they fix it ? Long shot I know but who knows...

If you’ve taken Advil or Bufferin in the past without any problems try Voltaren Gel which no longer requires a prescription. You can get it at Costco, CVS, Walgreens, etc. over the counter. I no longer get 2 epidural injections into my spine since turning on to Voltaren. A dab about the amount of toothpaste you’d put on your toothbrush is magical with in a few minutes. It won’t cure lower L3/L4/L5 discomfort but should substantially reduce your pain. Let me know if you try it and how your recovery is going. Maybe a good idea to have your GP check out X-rays or, if necessary an MRI. Good luck… sore lower backs suck big time,

@john4surf , i ll try the gel to see if it works but i d be surprised. I did all the x ray, MRI, bone scan, got it reviewed by GP and Sport doctors, they can t see anything that should create that pain for that long. Currently seeing a physio specialised in lumbar spine and pelvis, she says that I need to re-wire my glutes and my brain when performing daily activities (and to be honest my pain has reduced since i started but i feel that now i m stuck to get rid of it entirely).

Hey @Mat6920 - I have been on a similar path, but it doesn't mean that your diagnosis is the same as mine - the bit that caught my eye, is the "stabbing pain" you mention. Out of interest, when you lay on your back in bed and you sneeze or cough, do you get the same pain? What about when you suddenly miss-step (say to a lower elevation point with one foot), do you get a similar pain?

The short of it, is that I also have seen every GP, witch doctor and snake oil salesman under the sun with f/a results for 6+ years. That changed when I went to see a Neurosurgeon. It's my recommendation that you take the MRI and get the opinion of a neuro as well.

ps:"Re wiring" etc, sounds like horse sh!t to my ears.

pps: If I recall correctly, I think you're on the Gold coast, right? If so, I can highly recommend this guy who fixed me (and my sister in law). If nothing else, he can rule out disk degeneration.

I'm glad you suffer sudden stabbing back pain in the spine when brutally bending over while popping and that chiro, mri, x ray, physio, haven't fixed it.
I'm also glad you haven't read the book.
Thumbs down and sad faces for Al Soldano?
If I were Al, i’d’ve probably said
I’m glad you haven’t read the f*cking book yet

Lower back pains? Pop-ups? I laugh in your general direction.

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::monkey::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

When I had the just above the tailbone area fused, the neurosurgeon just lol'd when I asked him if I would be able to surf without back pain.

Pain is like 'Pan de cada dia' in my wheelhouse.

Try kneeboarding.

This is a very interesting topic for me. I'm coming to this issue from the opposite direction, I've had preexisting back pain that led to bad pop-up technique. Basically like you said, I need to keep my back straight to alleviate pain so I've developed a pop-up that puts me in somewhat of a squatting position.

I've been working on fixing this through Waveki, but it initially caused really bad back pain to keep my back arched while swinging my front foot under. I saw a physical therapist and am now slowly getting better at it and tolerating the discomfort much better.

I am doing slow motion Waveki pop-ups using yoga blocks to make it easier on my back and doing stretches for the back and hips to make the motion easier to tolerate.

That's my recommendation.

I have some lower back pain. Not to your extent but it is definitely noticeable and painful. The other week I twisted weird when I was surfing and had a full blown back spasm in the water. Doctor thinks its just me reaching middle age. I haven't found a cure and really starting to think it'll just be something I have to live with.

in the same boat. had mri's/xrays/physical therapy. mine is sort of dull pain/ ache for the most part unless it goes all the way out which will be a sharp restrictive pain. no sciatica tho.

they all think its just arthritis, maybe worn out cartilage from skating and snowboarding.

best solution for me is not stop moving once the pain is there. do whatever exercise you can get away with. the less i move the more my back feels stiff. ymmv.

I have the exact same thing. Just a dull pain most of the time. I can still exercise and handle most things but some days it hurts more than others.

Guess it is time I read the book. I don't know what book it is. I must not understand the inside joke.

I didn't surf today because my back hurt too much - I have no solution but tried some rational options.
On the days when its not so bad ibuprofen allows me to surf as long as I avoid being hit by the lip on takeoff in a session.
Its the one thing that really stops me surfing but I can still surf when its not so bad - look for the positives is all I've got!

OK, had my dinner and will respond more at length. My back started crampng while surfing. It got worse and worse rapidly. I got out and it took me 45 minutes to get my wetsuit off because bending over was excruciating. By the evening it got to where I couldn't stand unassisted. I went to ER and got steroids and opioids. After a day on the drugs I was walking again. I was told to stay active. Started PT. It took me 6 months before I could surf. One year before I could surf decently. It's now 2 years (it happened right before covid hit).

Your imaging showed nothing. I was told not to even get imaging because it would show pathologies.. which are normal and usually symptomless.

I did PT with a therapist for 6 months- starts with stretches ( Mackenzie exercises). I think they are just getting you r nervfouse system used to being in those positions that cause pain. If it makes it worse, back off but keep working on it. Then start with body weight strength exercises. Then use external weights. Like I said, the link I posted above has so much info...
