Pretty good beer, although I find it a little too hoppy/strong for my taste.
Too bad, they've been around a long time.

Anchor was started by Fritz Maytag (Maytag appliances) because he liked beer and was not satisfied with what a commercially available at the time. He had a cool annual tradition of reenacting the brewing of ancient beers. He went the whole nine yards and participants would dress in period clothing and they would try to keep it as close to authentic as possible.
From what I understand, Fritz is a pretty good guy.

i'm no beer connoisseur, but I really liked Anchor Steam. They also made a limited holiday ale that was good. So to the beer experts- what beer is most similar in taste?

It's an interesting style.

They take a lager yeast strain (which typically likes to ferment below 55* ) and they ferment it around ale fermentation temperatures (around 65*) which stresses the yeast and brings out some unique flavors.

These aren't widely distributed by any larger breweries that I know of, but go to a few local breweries and look for a "Steam Beer" or a "California Common."

Single fin Fuerteventura Hamburger joint. Have to pay what a 6er costs back "home", but.....

Bottom row 4th from left.

....I can still get a taste of The City, Baghdad by the Bay.

But I have a feeling these guys are getting it thru non traditional methods.

I'm always waiting for their Christmas Ale to come out around the holidays. Such a good beer.

And having an Anchor Steam on tap with some garlic fries = [[what happened to facelick emoji guy?]]

I know you can still get it right now, but as soon as that supply is out you won't see "Anchor Steam" again unless someone buys the brewery/brand.

One-offs question was what beer is most similar.

The answer is a Steam Beer (which is synonymous with California Common).
