When I lived in sc in the ‘70s one could go to the junkyard (B&M?) and find a bumper with a sticker that could be “fitted” on your junker ride. One of my most memorable surfs in the sc afternoon was at flawless middles with two other friends. Different times.

My service-connected buddy just texted me about this and yes.

You gotta flash your VA ID and youre good.

He is psyched to say the least.

Apparently you get access to the exchange and other stuff too.

Apparently some people are very pissed about this.

You might be able to get on Pendleton but Mugu is different. Security is constantly checking IDs. They will roll down to the beach and go car to car. If your dad is not with you, you could lose your access. I've seen contractors escorted from the base

was wondering when someone would ask about that.

it’s an ad from the past (60s?). It’s creepier than you think. Heres the full ad. Girl is 12.

Damn really? I saw a roofing contractor get led away in handcuffs. One of the base security guards who I got to know by working up there warned him. He would go car to car. On the beach. Asking for IDs and sponsor. People got the boot alot because their sponsor dropped them off for the day. No bueno.

I was a military dependent until I was 23 and had an ID. While going to college in LA, I would surf Mugu whenever the conditions would lineup and I could make the drive up. I would get hassled so hard (being a brown kid) eventhough I had a legit ID and could surf/be on base whenever I wanted. Most hassled I've ever been on any base was surfing Mugu. Like someone said above, they go car to car. Sometimes they'd loop back and double check the brown kid lol.

Scored some foggy weekdays either by myself or with less than 10 people total, spread out.

Mugu security is notorious for harassing people surfing. The new law gives service connected disabled vets MWR access so the cottages at San Onofre, Barbers Point, and of course the beach at Mugu should be open.

Ahhh the good ole high school trips to base on da east side. Got hassled sometimes but not often, maybe because of the times we pulled in marines who were drowning or getting sucked out to sea.

MPs have yelled at me and friends from shore and we have flipped them off, said ok, I'll be out after this one, oh one more, ooh no it's too good I can't get out now the barrels, or we were cool and they were cool, etc. But I'm no longer a night shift bartender in my early 20s who can chance getting chased and arrested by MPs, and things got way, way more locked down after 911. Plus, if you have time to check Arnolds to McGrath enough you'll know where good drama free and uncrowded sand is anyway.

Boated in to PM a few times, back in a day. The last time I did, military got on the bull horns and told us to split because they were going to launch some bombs or whatever, so we didnt get to surf, and ended up back up the beach on the other side where it was more closed out.
Snuck in one time w/an electrician friend. Hid in his extra cab, buried beneath some tools. worked fine, and got to surf w out getting caught. Sketched though!
It honestly is really amazing at how many B & C grade local pros are there and get to surf there whenever. The shenanigans and free sh!t they give away from their sponsors just to be able to surf there must be ridonculous!
It's also equally amazing at how many kooks get to surf or bodyboard there that just really shouldn't get to.
