good work tom!
In the 60's at one time....that long beach run from the traffic light that comes out of El Segundo going TOWARDS Playa Del Rey,use to be one of the great Street Racing places around. The strip going by the Hyperion Plant was long and straight and the run-down time after the quarter mile gave you lots of time to slow down and turn up Imperial Hwy or just make a u-turn and watch on the "beach side of Vista Del Mar.
The cops finally got wise due to so many cars within the area AND..if you were caught...Everyone got a ticket..or ran for the beach..which at that time a ticket was just issued to you and your "abandoned" vehicle.Racers would either come out of El Porto or turn around at the old "Standard Gas Station" right there on the corner, move towards the stop light..and when the light turned green...the race was on...to the finish line...about mid point of the Plant..just passed the driveway....60's Chevy,Fords, the new Dodge hemis were coming out then...and the races were on .....
fun day's..running down to the beach...from the cops and laughing like silly teenagers.......but the smell sometimes got too bad from the beach and pier....and folks puked...either from drinking too much or just the oil-like smell all the time..
"Nuff already Pope"!!

I have witnessed this someone. also have seen cops on the other end by the little park hiding behind a car. speed trap for sure.there's a little cranny in the side of the road just south of the Grand parking lot that cops sit in on their bikes, writing tickets all day long. that whole area is definitely a speed trap.
