1) an electric planer will be so much faster, accurate and consistent when doing big mowing such as foil and rail bevels. its taking me forever to do the bands with a surform, where with a eplaner it would take mere seconds. yes you can do it with just hand tools but really for efficiency and consistency i need to get an eplaner.
2) getting foil, rocker and bottom all right takes much planning and practice and technique. above that trying to mix in a concave to a v is fairly advance while maintaining ur target foil and rocker.
3) block planes are a bitch to use, and having the right height setting on it is pretty key i guess.
4) rail bands are hard!! currently still stuck on them
5) jc 101 vid makes shaping look way too easy, i look back and am in awe how nice his demo board comes out with just a few cuts of the planer. he seems to shape with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. kinda like watching gerry lopez ride pipe.
in summary, as mentioned before, shaping a ridable board is not too bad but shaping a good board takes much experience. i have the utmost respect now for shapers having hands on view of what they are dealing with. shiet is hard no joke. after this first board i will take a break and figure out everything i learned and maybe start with a better strategy next time. a very good learning experience so far
