Getting a coffee maker was one of the best decisions of my life. Miss that morning coffee walk / routine (when there was no line). But damn you save a lot of money and get way more jacked up.
Mrs. Flyinraptr and i had been in our home in So Cal for 20 years - when we decided to retire and move to Nica - it took us about a year of garage sales, Craigslist, Goodwill etc - to get rid of stuff. We had no idea of how much crap we had accumulated - money spent on things that we didn't even realize we still had and couldn't figure out why we needed it in the first place. In addition, we began dropping things we spent money on like - subscriptions, services - lot of things that you overlook because it only costs a small amount per month - but when you start adding up all the things that come out of your paycheck on a monthly basis - it adds up. Sometimes it not how much you make but how much you save.

My mom’s advice after college graduation....“people go broke $5 at a time”....so, what I do and did while waiting tables was put $5.50 cash away in a shoebox everyday after work and double it on the days I didn’t work....basically $40 a week equals $2,080 annually without even trying...that’s a board and a trip to Central America every year...

i think the new bird hauffman could be among us!!!

Well, thanks to covid everyones been drinking a more around here. I'm eating less (lost some weight) and drinking more. By more i mean 1-2 beers a few days a week. here at home. quite light.
never got into weed and the other stuff.

But some of my friends drink almost everyday. hard liquor too. but they mix it with coke. sometimes those fckers go on for 2-3 days like its carnival week.
I thought booze was banned from sale in Panama. Mom-in-law says they've been making homemade hooch up in Boquete.

I think that there are a few ways to look at board buying/collecting/quiver building cycle.
Looking for the magic slipper.
Want to try something new.
Some like me have less actual time to surf but more time to think about and order boards to maximise the fleeting actual water time.
This usually this leads to a degree of boards to recycle and good resale value.

This forum is epic for unveiling designs that a lot of us may not have even known about or considered. Flip side I have developed problem and a list of about 10+ boards I want thanks to the our WSBL (World Surfboard Buying League).

When I’m surfing good I start thinking about getting new boards. I guess that’s stock?

I’ve been out of the water for a couple weeks. I’m hesitant to order the mote boards I’ve been wanting. If I was surfing everyday I bet those orders would have been placed.

Not necessarily related to giant quivers, but like 75% of the good surfers in my town live with their parents or some type of odd family support.
Totally. Where I grew up surfing the OG legend and board hoarder lived in his Mom's basement. Sid Abruzzi you may have heard of him. He eventually inherited the house and the basement is an epic DIY museum of surf and skate memorabilia. He's got some great boards both skate and surf, some dating back to the 1st surfers on the island.

When I lived in Central California (SF-SC zone) for a little clip of time it was kinda of the same, friends taking over their parents standard half a million dollar homes and that was at the beginning of the millennium. Here in Oregon the coast is pretty rural and not much opportunity. Also pretty conservative and not to progressive. I'd probably be fine living over there if I didn't have 2 young daughters and have before scraping by on a forestry job in my late 20's often wanting better surf. Portland seems to be a better place to raise kids IMO. I've also done well investing here now it’s like a mini Bay Area and should have a nugget once I peace out somewhere with point breaks and warm water . I'm also close to the mountains and snowboarding is another hobby of mine that aint cheap.

Think I have 8 surfboards on my rack right now, but mostly only ride 3 of them. I definitely enjoy reading about the guys here who surf more than I do and are constantly getting new boards and reviewing them. Its helped me decide on new boards, when I do get a new one.

in my neighborhood most of the trustafarians/yuppies are riding a the newest FireWire fad. Like literally a new one every couple weeks.

those dudes living in their parents house? often on backyard shapes or a beat up favorite. They’re much more core than the rich folk who moved in and don’t know every peak has a name and it’s not what Surfline calls them.

Same where I live.

Personally, I just find it sad. There's more to life than surfing. A lot of guys I know just surf and kind of waste their life away while stressing out their aging parents. No one cares how good you surf when you're in your 40s.

You could make a case for a lot of things. I'm sitting here wondering how you guys can afford housing in california or taxes in NJ but I guess we all make choices about life, toys, spending, and saving . 4K a year on surfboards, or going out to dinner. Ever think about how much people spend on starbuck or going out to lunch at work? it's all craziness.

like on the highway, everyone else is either going too fast or too slow.

I never get coffee at Starbucks or other places unless I'm on a work trip and work is paying. Never eat lunch out. Everything I was paying for i shopped around and got for less. Pretty much cut dinner out. Its amazing how much more money I have. Wine budget increased significantly though.

Polar opposite in my case. When there's waves and I'm surfing well, I surf mostly one board and I'm happy. When weeks of diabolical surf come to pass, I start looking for anything from soft tops, ultra grovelers and step ups.

There must be something psychological there wanting to buy my way into waves :p

I am kinda the opposite, if I am surfing daily, I am OK...... if I am out of the water for a few days, I start to get itchy..... and the board porn on Insta doesn't help when I am in the office!
