Foam boards are much friendlier to the beginner.
So? Why do you love the pussification of America so much?

What did you learn on? Me - 6'10" G&S diamond tail with a 11" single fin and bungee cord leash of death. And never got hurt by it.

Why not just get him a used real board?
I am getting ready to teach my 2 daughters to surf, and have a 7'11" longish board and a really big 6'10" fish I have kept around just for the purpose of teaching them. Then I was at sanO a while back and saw a ton of people on the Costco boards, a couple guys doing a great job (should have been on a real board) and lots of kids. It was at that point I decided that I wanted one for the girls, if nothing else, if they fell and hit their head on the foam vs hard fiberglass or got cut by a fin or even worse for me would be if they rode a wave all the way into shore and jacked up my fins or bottom.

I want them to have as fun as possible and lessen the chances of getting hurt so they never say "this sucks, I don't want to do it, it hurt me". I think for young kids, it is perfect.

I learned on a real board too so what?

Hopefully my kids won't be damaged by people calling them pussies. They'll probably be too busy having fun to care.

I didn't call you kids pussies - just used an erbbism

What happened to ideals of reuse and recycle?

And if you learned on a fiberglassed board, why can't your kids?

Check Craigs List for a used one. They are great for kids starting but don't take long to be outgrown so there's not much reason to buy a new one. You can pass them on or throw in the shed for another kid someday.

I have plenty of experience buying boards, probably a hundred or so in about 40 years, all made in the USA, including a Mason and Smith soft top in 1980 or 1981 and most recently an INT soft top. What I want now and what my kid wants now is a $99 Wavestorm from Costco. Your question was not helpful in the least.

Call your local Costco and have them look up in their system
which nearby stores have them in stock. Then, CALL that store
to confirm they actually have them. This is what I did after
being sent to two different stores only to have them tell me
they didn't actually have them. Calling to confirm literally
took less than 5 minutes of time though.

I'm astounded it took so many replies before Oceanslide simply stated the obvious action for anyone with half a brain.

Thanks, I'll call around tomorrow (unless someone knows their local Costco has them and posts the info).
