It arrived today. I couldnt get the nvs nubster fin to fit in the center box. Thought it was the fin but I tried a different center fin and it wouldnt fit either. For some reason the smallish von sol center fin that came with the board fit so I just ran it and some npj side bites. I dunno if there is resin in the box or what is up but I didnt have time to figure it out because the wind was calm and it was my one window this week to surf. Had a really fun session in some soft, waist high rollers with the occasional steep inside section. Pretty much the exact type of surf I got this board for. It felt good and more nimble than I expected for an 8-0. Hopefully I can get the center box figured out so I can run it as a twin + nub next session.

I love my Shadow Mid Twin and Manta, so I expected to really like this based on Sean's recommendation but I didn't click with it at all. I bought it for bigger days at softer reefs in central SD and it was fine but the thick tail never felt settled in bigger waves for me.

It helps a lot when people post this. I tend to beat myself up for being a shitty surfer when I don't click with a board that others love (e.g. Lost RNF96).

I can't freaking detect where I am on my HG2. It's unintuitive to me, despite having objectively decent rides, and I'd need to commit to learning how to feel comfortable on it. I might need to unload mine :(

Hard to parse out how much is the archer vs. the arrow vs. the conditions i ride it in.

Session 2. Twin + nubster. Same spot. Waves were bigger, like head high, and not as good. I only got a handful of decent waves but it was enough to feel the difference in fin setup. I didn't care for it, at least the bigger, lumpy surf. Less control and smoothness. Still had a fun session and I think the board is capable of working well in this type of surf. I appreciate that because the nose isnt super wide and thick I can actually get a pretty good duckdive out of it if I sink one rail and then the other. I might try moving the nubster back a bit and see how that feels but my instinct is that this board is going to go better for me as a 2+1 or thruster. The side boxes are just way too far forward for what I like in a twin fin. I wish the side boxes were futures or fcs2. I dont have many OG fcs to mess around with.

I bet TA fg twin set or similiar template would be plenty fin for this bord. The long rails really help and find my 6'9" plenty of hold yet has that twin carve up and down feelin':shaka:

I’ve written my HG and knee-high to overhead old man’s up to pumping Honolulu Bay and everything in between. Board gets into waves incredibly easy and super fun to ride.

I’m probably going to get there more Performance side of the HG because the regular one has limits

does the hg catch waves well? work in weaker stuff?
so far my impression is that those are it's strong points.

I don't think I'll be riding mine in legit big surf because I have real guns for that but we'll see. I'm really curious to see how it does at the kelpy, mushy reef wave this winter.

Yeah, that's definitely how I felt as well. I also couldn't duck dive mine well enough for the size of waves I intended it for. I rode it in big waves frontside and backside; frontside felt okay - like I could trust it, but backside I didn't feel like I could trust it at all even though it never slid out.

I love my 6'6" shadow mid twin and wanted more upper range, so Sean recommended this instead of a bigger shadow. The shadow has a (relatively) bladed out tail for that type of board and I like it so much better. I ended up ditching the HG2 and just sticking with my shadow. I'd still love something bigger but similar for those rare DOH days where 6'6" doesn't cut it against the current but I still managed with it on big days this winter.

I actually only prefer it in small surf. The amount of volume in the tail allows for a lot of speed on a really small wave. That combined with the forward fin placement allows for tighter turns at slower speeds than you'd think.

I would agree with this. I had some fun small wave sessions on it but that's not what I wanted it for.

Okay I've ridden it a couple more times as a twin+nub. Still not a fan. It felt difficult to get on rail and it did funky, slidey stuff when I got my foot too far back to turn it. Even just cruising down the line I didn't feel like I was getting the drive I wanted. The waves were not amazing but it was waist/chest and felt like plenty of energy to get moving.

On a positive note I rode it as a single + sidebites (Christenson 9.5, small sidebites) in overhead, mushy reef waves today and it felt awesome. Not life threatening surf but decently powerful groundswell with long running sections. No issues with drive or hold and the rocker felt well suited to the wave. It's got enough curve up front to handle steep drops but it still trims and holds a high line nicely. Between the rocker and the fairly narrow nose it feels like it's pretty easy to keep those forward rails from catching and getting in the way. Getting a full wrapping turn isn't the easiest and forget about hitting the lip or anything but I got a couple decent gutbacks and it feels pretty reactive to steering input from the mid to rear section of the board.

I've got a center box futures adapter on the way and I plan on trying it as a straight thruster or maybe running the twins with a bigger trailer.

I saw that board and Used and was tempted to pull the trigger given the price and value. Glad you’re digging it with a single fin. No shame in that.

I ride it with large hatchets (plenty of rake) and a large(ish) trailer. You want plenty of fin on this one.

I'll post a pic of my fins in a little while...

I will say, this bort takes a bit to figure out the sweet spot, but once you dial it in it's predictable and fun.
