If I ever sell my Varial board, this is what I'm doing beforehand. The heat gun trick:
Varial Surf Technology on Instagram: "Varial Foam has a high resistance against heat and delaminations so you can remove pressures with a heat gun. 1) Apply heat and make sure it’s not too hot (enough to be able to touch/check) then back off the heat and wait for it to cool. 2) Repeat this process until the pressure has been lifted and/or is gone. 3) Please note that some deeper pressures may not pop back fully. 4) If you don’t notice any more progress after a few attempts, please discontinue. 5) If this process is done incorrectly, you may cause damage to your board so please be careful. I'm normally OCD about pressure dents, can't stand 'em. But I've got to say, they don't bug me too bad on the Varial. My insanity is glassed 646 with epoxy resin and the pressure dent situation isn't really that bad at all. My will's fish is in poly resin and that's definitely worse.Been reading through all this Varial talk. Made me reconsider getting both my Simon Shapes boards in Varial because pressure dings cause me pain. Going PU for my 6'6 Double Bump, but said I'd take the 5'10 asym swallow tail in Varial if it's in infused glass. However, is that an in-shop only deal? Dunno if John does that, but asked n will wait and see...
Thoughts?
100% IMHO my experience is its just dents instead of dings and much better then having to fix it and only time pressure dings or dents cause trouble is when the glass pulls away from foam or bubles and so far with CFT and pu/epoxy S glass never does only leaves dent. Some of the pics in this thread show more dimples than regular PU boards. I wonder why that is? Is it due to more inconsistencies in the foam? That would be weird considering all the tech talk on the Varial website...
Poly blanks have a harder foam on the deck and it softens as you get toward the middle. Some of the pics in this thread show more dimples than regular PU boards. I wonder why that is? I'm about to order a custom varial and debating epoxy over poly. Besides less denting, any other benefits that you feel by going with epoxy?I'm on my fourth Varial and the first epoxy Infused Glass. The other three were Infused Glass polys. My first one that I got over three years ago (still going strong!) dimpled like crazy, but once the deck had a bunch of the golfball-sized dents, it stopped. I don't/didn't get the big wells I would get on my non-Varial boards.
I listed to a podcast where Stretch was touting the benefits of denting, saying they strengthen the board to what he called the "hammock effect".
I'm only about five sessions on my new epoxy glassed Varial, but so far it seems more resistant to denting.
So far, at least, my epoxy board is staying whiter. the poly board is an eggshell color.I'm about to order a custom varial and debating epoxy over poly. Besides less denting, any other benefits that you feel by going with epoxy?
My post surf routine usually involves getting through multiple doors to rinse my feet off and put my bort away in my condo complex, which doesn't always happen without the bort having an encounter with some sort of structure. I never actually dinged my polys, but had a few underglass shatters from some of the bigger bangs. A neighbor opened a door into me the other day while I was rinsing my feet off and the epoxy took a sizable hit to the rail and there was nothing to show for it.I'm about to order a custom varial and debating epoxy over poly. I don't remember feeling any differences between the two. First Varial I ever had was epoxy and I haven't ordered one since.I'm about to order a custom varial and debating epoxy over poly. Besides less denting, any other benefits that you feel by going with epoxy?
