What's the captain protocol in these situations? Untie the boats and head out to sea, or try to hold in place?

Get to deep water if possible, if not get boat under way with pointy end into the sea/wave.

More updates:

1 Closer to blast, 15 meter waves.

2 Not much left of the co-joined island which was made up of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai islands. And they are really just the exposed tips of a crater rim...outline of crater in marked by red dash line:

looks like it just hit in slo county. watching the cam rewind on surfline at some of the spots around here you see there was a good surge just now. very minor from the looks of it
Heard that it hit here as 1' @ 40 minutes(!)

I surfed for a couple hours that morning and it was definitley rising and receding and causing a ton of crazy rips and currents. Overhead and pretty fun but a ton of paddling.
