Trump open to campaign finance reform

January 17, 2016
Pointing to the effects of "horrible" super-PACs, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Sunday said America needs to come up with a solution to keep big money out of politics.

"Well, I think you need it, because I think PACs are a horrible thing," Trump said on CNN's "State of the Union" when asked if he would pursue campaign finance reform.

The billionaire businessman, who said he is self-financing his campaign, said the wall separating super-PACs and candidates running for public office is illusory.

"First of all, everyone's dealing with their PAC. You know, it's supposed to be like this secret thing. They're all dealing with it," he said.

Trump pointed to a pair of simultaneous rallies for Republican primary candidate Jeb Bush, one hosted by his campaign and the other by a pro-Bush super-PAC.

"Bush had an event where he had an event for his whatever and an event for his PAC, right? For his campaign. The ballrooms were right next to each other and the events were simultaneous," he said. "You tell me they're not dealing with each other?"

He said candidates become "psychologically" beholden to their big-money donors, which may influence them to disregard the public interest.

"Yes, yes, oh yeah. I mean, look, psychologically yes. That's the way it is," he said when asked if politicians are swayed by their benefactors.

"Somebody gives them money, not anything wrong, just psychologically when they go to that person, they're going to do it," he added. "They owe them. And by the way, they may therefore vote negatively toward the country."

"That's not going to happen with me."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So lemme get this straight. Trumps thinks running a presidential campaign from the contributions of many small-money people should be outlawed so that fat cats can buy the presidency with their own money.

Yeah, that's "conservative". Right.

I don't think you understand how it actually works.

Big-money donors are the only contributions that matter to candidates. In fact, even Bernie with all of his grassroots contributions still got lots of money from Unions. Trump knows better than anyone how the super-rich like him buy candidates because he's done it before. In fact, he called out the other candidates on one of the first debates.

You're really against campaign finance reform? You think the system works correctly now? Are you, PRCalDude and 23rdstMB all paid RNC shills?

This, coming from a leftist..... Sure! Who could be opposed to "reform"? Right?

The more money a candidate has, the better chance he has to get out his message. In politics, money IS speech, and free speech is guaranteed by the Constitution. In other words, whether I speak as an individual (individual contributions), or speak with other people (UNION OR PAC contributions) the federal government has no right to silence me.

Only a communist would think otherwise.

Cruz Suggests Trump Could Be Democrat

GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) posted an attack-ad on Twitter before the Democratic debate on Sunday night, "As the ?#DemDebate begins, Republicans have to wonder which team ?@realDonaldTrump would play for."

Attached to Cruz's tweet was a link to a YouTube video, which is a montage of GOP frontrunner Donald Trump praising Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton during interviews in the past.

"She really works hard," Trump stated in one of the old interviews. "I think she does a good job."

"They are just really terrific people," he said of both Bill and Hillary Clinton. "I like them both very much."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Trump is running as a "conservative" for the right to face down a Democrat who Trump thinks "does a good job", who Trump thinks is a "terrific" person. Funny, I wonder which team Trump plays for too.

I thought you were just rallying against someone buying an office. What you just said effectively is allowing offices to be bought and sold in the guise of "free speech"

Well, rich white people know what's best for everyone, so we should just let them run the world without any checks or balances.
Many of the former British colonies are in worse shape now the British are gone.

So maybe the whites ARE better at running countries.

I didn't say that money buys the presidency. I said that Trump wants to buy the presidency. Money only places you into a position where you CAN win the presidency. Like McCain and virtually every Democrat Trump wants to outlaw anyone's ability to win the presidency who doesn't already have the $millions needed to do so.

Either argue the point or STFU.

Well if Conrad said it, it MUST be true.

Before Citizen's United 6 years ago, the process was limited to keep people with millions from buying an office. Anyone could contribute, even any organization could contribute (no organization should have the same rights as an individual but that is neither here nor there) but the contribution was limited to $2500 per contribution.

Now, anyone can dump as much money as they want into a candidate, effectively buying the election. Without reform, only someone like Trump can run against this. You are trying to keep people from buying the presidency, but arguing for the current rules which completely allow people and organizations to buy the presidency.

Mind boggling.

It's good to see that you agree that political donations are speech, and are therefore protect by the First Amendment.

Your Mind was boggled before this discussion.

How much should you be allowed to speak about politics? .....$1 worth? .....$2,500 worth?

Who gets to decide that? ....only the guys who spent $10,000 to get their guys into congress?

Who should be allowed to speak? .....only people who ALREADY got a bunch of money from real estate and gambling casinos? ......or should lots of little guys be allowed to pool their money, and defeat the corrupt fat cats?

The First Amendment is all I need to know. Lower law has no place in this discussion.
..
Two more questions:

1. I'm sure Trump will appreciate your vote as much as McCain did. What? .....You didn't vote for McCain, you wouldn't vote for a Republican, and wouldn't vote for Trump if your life depended on it.

2. Then why should Republicans nominate a liberal like Trump who couldn't swing a vote with this rhetoric if he had to? All the money in the world wouldn't buy that.
