Im going to be in cali near the trestles area around August 23rd-29th. Being that I have never surfed the west coast during such time, anyone know how the swell might be?

Don't listen to Bobsurf; he is whacked! I think August is still 'summer' and probably not the best time of year to go. When I was thinking about taking a surf trip to CA last year, my "O.C." contacts suggested going around October or November. (I ended up going for 9 days in October 2003 and had the best surf trip of my life)

Seriously, you can never tell in advance what the swell is gonnabe like ahead of time. Even trips to Baja, Hawaii, or anywhere in the world, the window YOU are there might be big, small, nonexistent, or very good.
That said, expect small, mushy, weak waves. If it gets bigger, expect bigger, mushy, weak waves. And when it gets 1.5 overhead, expect 8', mushy, weak waves

I think that many people on this forum make posts just because they are nerds and don't ever really go surfing . As for Lower Trestles in late August, you should score some decent waves. This is prime time for good south ground swells. You should expect to get some waves and might even get lucky with a hurricane swell spinning off the Mexican coast that time of year. Be ready to hassle for your waves. Expect a very large crowd factor.....you might be able to get more waves at Upper Trestles depending on your experience level.

Lowers has 30 guys out in the middle of the night on a full moon when there's ANY kind of a swell. During the day, forget it. It can be junk and 50+ guys are out. With a very small take-off zone Lowers is crowded with 15 people out.

Before my last trip to Central America I took a good look at the water (upper Trestles) to take a mental note of what I was leaving. I counted 60 guys out in probably 3 take-off zones. This doesn't include the guys near Cottons or the few take-off zones just south of there.

I hope you're good because if you're not you won't catch any waves. A lot of the guys that surf down there are better than average. If the sets are infrequent, you could easily catch only a few waves in a 3hr session with crowds like that (crowds of competent surfers not crowds of kooks.)

Now this is at Uppers the prediction is even worse for Lowers. Go someplace else, it's alreay too crowded.

Fugging contests and magazines. They ruined the place.

uppers is your best bet if the swell is a good sw and you ahve a medium to high tide. if there is a sw and a little nw or w in the water, theres tons of places you can surf that are better then trestles due to the lack of 50 20yr olds with chips on their shoulders.

Trestles is like any other spot. It can be funky for good stretches (like most of the current summer), and firing for days on end (very unlikely though). If you go in August, you chances are decent to hit a swell. However, every one and his mother will be out with you, especialy due to the weak summer we've had. If you're real lucky, you'll hit it when it is good and one wave can make your day. However, just like most good spots, you need to have respect for the guy in position. I've seen some ugly moments out there, but for the most part, it is surviveable.

lot of times it doesn't matter your skill level cause pretty much everyone out there will be ripping. If your face isn't familiar chances are you'll get dropped in on. If your face is familiar, chances are you'll get dropped in as well. Get the picture?
