Yes she does, I have tried to ocean swim all winter and even in a wetsuit cannot take the pain in anything under 50.

My routine on that swim

is that a shark?!

I inhaled a metric ton of sea water swimming in cloudy water in La Jolla shores years back and came upon a little pod of leopard sharks and lost my chit.

was dying laughing at myself after bc they’re harmless but in that half second I thought I was seeing jaws.

I know her husband. My daughter used to work in his company. He's a solid surfer and cool guy. Never met the wife but he told me about her swimming accomplishments. This one -incredible-43 degrees no wetsuit.
where does it say the water was 43?

was a chilly 48 over a week ago. been climbing steadily back into the mid 50's since then.

ebb tide draining the bay water was probably around 54-55 for her swim

"As she approached the Farallon Escarpment — steeply sloped, reaching a depth of over 6,000 feet — the water temperature plunged to 43 degrees.

Worried, her crew saw her skin start to turn pale. They gave her hot chocolate and warm water to pour over her neck and on her hands."
It could be hyperbole, but I would bet there are cold pockets of upwelling. I would think after doing it for half a day her body was in so much shock she could not tell anyway.

missed that i guess. im sure there were pockets of "warm" and colder water along the way.

Also keep in mind she prob burned an extraordinary amount of calories. I know ultramarathoners need to consume insane amounts of calories during their runs. Like multiple large pizzas on the side of the road. I imagine a swim like this is like that if not worse. And prob. A big part of her ability to be exposed to such cold water for so long.

Started the swim at 3:30 in the morning. Insane. What a legend.

This lady kind of reminds me of Diana Nyad - great documentary about her swim from Cuba to The Keys on Netflix and the dramatized movie version is also a pretty good watch.

Not to disparage her effort, but she got a significant boost by a huge outgoing tidal current. I’d assume it was planned start time to ride the current or the attempt would’ve have been doable at all.

Amy Applehans - former LACo Guard. I love it!

I'm assuming she's married to Adam G's brother - don't know his name, but apparently someone on here does.

Thanks for the link. Awesome to see she's still slaying life!

Edit: Frankly kind of mind-blown that she's a grandmother. Didn't think of our generation (myself included) as being *that* old yet.
Rookie training at Zuma in April prob just as cold lol

It has to be the same thing for those that have swam the other direction. No one could make consistent forward progress fighting the tides at the mouth of the bay

All the kudos in the world to her but for the life of me I can't understand how anyone would think to themself.. ya know, I think swimming from the Gate to the Farallons sounds like a good idea. :crazy2:

my grandma was famous in the town we went to in the summer on the Jersey shore for her daily distance swims rain of shine. She wore one of those flower bathing caps lol. She was a big strong old lady and I remember seeing her swimming wayyy out there. Our nickname for her was the brick. She’s why I have such good manners. She would not hesitate to smack the sh!t of you if you didn’t say please thank you excuse me etc

I never forget the day in the 70s when these hippie dirtbag skateboarders set up a ramp on the sidewalk it was a quarter pipe that went around the corner lol. I remember her and them getting into it and a lot of yelling and fuck yous etc going back forth bw the brick and them and next thing I know it’s chill and she lets the z-boys use our hose to make koolaid.
