My name is Al, Al Soldano. I live in Thousand Oaks, CA, and I am a decent surfer. I can do "off-the-lips" Tommy Curren style, and "full-gauge" "roundhouse-cutbacks" into the foam. I can always see people in the lineup turn around and watch me from behind the wave when I catch a wave. I am 29, and am planning to get sponsored and become a professional surfer, and am considering working towards world champion. I can do "new-school" tricks, but my style and assault is a derivitive of the "old-school." I am the "new milineum" surfer, and I have a great shot at this.

Al, you may be hot, but you're already 29. In one year you'll "over-the-hill" in the shortboard pro-surfing scene. I don't want to burst your bubble, but don't quit your day job. If you want to compete for the fun and competition of it, cool. But don't get your hopes up too much when it comes to making a living off of it. You needed to be thinking about this 10 years ago if you wanted to succeed financially as a professional. Good luck, either way.

First you need to shred!! Back in the day surfing in a ESA event surfing in like boys or jr. mens I remember looking out at second light (you know where i'm at) and looking at Kelly Slater when he was surfing menehunes which he was probably 8 or so , But i remember saying to my freinds(scott todd, todd holland, sean slater, rich murray, justin carver) that guy shreds!!!!!! And he was only 8. I remember sharing 1st peak at sebastion with him, I was older but the kid ripped young. To make a long story short there is Know way you can make it in the pro tour at your age unless you shred !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know about that place!! I went back there and searched for anything I might've been in on, but there's big blank spots. Below is the first thing I found and I remember doing it, it was from a time when I had been laying low on the BB and it was the first thing I had posted in awhile I think. It's funny how you forget people/posters and stuff on these silly things. I'm 33 now, but in BB years, I think I would have been only 6 or 8 when I posted this one, and it was still, pre-this-registration... I found one whole thread with nep, gws, and some others still here, debating the whole registration concept. Almost classic, but it's just a BB. I guess I should calm down now <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> . Thanks for the link!

In case you hadn’t noticed, this place has become… pretty damn stupid lately. Most forums require you to register your handle and then e-mail you a password. This eliminates imposters and cuts down on the handle switching. It also brings a level of accountability to the board and makes BBSA’s job a lot easier. I’m real curious to see who would be for this type of a setup and who would be against it. Let’s hear it, what do you think? Yes or No?

Good Idea Yes, We should track and monitor everyone. More control. Everyone register everything you own, including your thoughts...
LAME BAD IDEA! More freedom is what we need. Why is eveyone such a god damn whiner. If you don't like a post, don't bother reading it, and certainly don't bother posting to it. People should be able to say what ever they want. This is called Freedom of Expression.

By the way GWS - I don't see any good topics on the BB with you starting them lately. In the first 4 pages of posts you only started two topics, both *****ing about the state of the BB. Why don't you quit wasting time whining and think up a clever post.

In CLOSING - Ignore it if you don't like it. Start a trend, think up a good post instead of whining..

If they do start the BS registration process that is what hotmail and yahoo instant email accounts are for

--At least his threads have been positive unlike yours.

I don't see how a message that contains derogatory comments about anything or anyone can be considered clever.

As far as hotmail and yahoo accounts...well that can be easily prevented. Lots of sites don't accept those accounts. --BB Surf Angel.

I'm sick and tired of our having to continually suggest this type of action. How many times has Surfer come to us to ask our opinion and we've told them to do something like this?
How many threads have backed such an idea?

Do they really give a crap about the opinions of the folks out here? I kinda think this bb is a very low priority, and I suppose I can understand why; where is their financial incentive to do ANYTHING with the bb? I guess we're lucky to have this forum at all.

But frankly, I'm getting really tired of the cycles of bullcrap that go on out here.

Look, freedom of speech is one thing, and I'm generally against censorship... but when that "freedom" turns into senseless attacks on others, highly-derogatory comments about specific individuals, racism, or senseless crap like porn on a Surfer site... it's no longer "freedom of speech", it's just wasteful crap.

I've built web sites with functionality like this in them, I'm familiar with the canned SW out there.... it's NOT an earth-shaking issue to set up the features to allow BBSA to kick idiots outta here for multiple infractions.

I'm just one guy... but I've ben here for a little while and I try to contribute as much as I can - and my opinion is that if Surfer doesn't want to do their part to make this a good place and to stave off as much of the crap as possible.... then mebbe I'll just go do it myself one weekend and give passwords to those of us that aren't total jakoffs!!

My overall suggestion; Let's make this the LAST time we have this discussion.

Thank you Hitler for helping to make the case for registration. The theory I had when I decided to put this up was that people like Silva, (aka Mum in his incarnation of the day) Dr. Ruth, or some guy willing to take the handle ‘Hitler’ would object to this proposal. I predict the trend will continue. The people that object will for the most part come on with anonymous handles (like the ball less little pricks they are) knowing that if they start using their real handles you will clearly see the division. The ones who want to post crap and troll will oppose it. It screws with their agenda.
And by the way “Hitler,” why would anyone bother to post anything good when the board is preoccupied with crap? I stop making any effort, as you observed. I doubt if that is unique, matter of fact if you scroll down through the posts you will see a number of the better posters lamenting the current state and bailing on the place. There has been some very cool stuff that has happened on this board, but when you have to wade through racist bull **** and hostility to find anything decent, the place ceases to be worth it. It does for me anyway. But hey, if that’s what you and Surfer are into, have fun. Wallow in the **** with your peers.

And you should try and get out more often “Hitler.” Few of the other boards out there ACCEPT Hotmail or Yahoo accounts.

I tend to agree. I've only been checking out this board for a month or so, but I honestly can't believe how stupid some of the stuff on here is. Speaking for myself as a relatively new surfer I'm curious about all kinds of topics related to surfing -- etiquette, travel ideas, environmental issues, technique, etc. But it seems like every time someone tries to start a decent thread, it's immediately bombarded by a bunch of frustrated wankers trying to start an online argument. I have a fast internet connection so at least I can filter through most of it, but I really feel sorry for anyone with a 56k. I would just give up.
It probably won't solve everything though because no matter what, there's going to be a lot of frustration expressed here because let's face it, we'd all rather be surfing waves than surfing an online bulletin board!

2. You said "And by the way “Hitler,” why would anyone bother to post anything good when the board is preoccupied with crap? I stop making any effort, as you observed"

That's a real good attitude. Maybe it's because your too busy reading and posting to the topics you whine about.

It's obvious that the controverisal topics that you whine about are the ones that have like 100 responses. This tells me that this is what the majority wants...

3. As far as your comment "And you should try and get out more often “Hitler.” Few of the other boards out there ACCEPT Hotmail or Yahoo accounts."

I don't spend all my time trolling BB's so I have no idea what their communist policies are. I do know that there are thousands of anonymous email providers out there that I could use instead of hotmail or yahoo, no problem. If they do go the Nazi route I will be sure to let others know about these services..

It is basically done for a site to build an email list for spamming purposes later on..

Everyone that likes to remain anonymous will do so anyway with fake names and anyone of the hordes of throw away free email services out there..

If the BB really cared to get rid of people that bombard the BB with BS they could do so EASILY with the IP filtering function..

Okay, here is my take on this.
I personally hate logging in when I'm on the web. It seems like every website makes you log in.

I thought it would be cool for our site to be different. No logging in, just instant chatter, banter, etc.

As many of you may know, our original BB was "no login." So when Kick Media came on as our backend team, I demanded that the BB stay the same. I wanted to make you guys happy.

Some have suggested two rooms. One with log in, one without.

I'm not against any of this, just want to make the whole place cool, keep most of us happy, and continue the great vibe here.

--Well Scott there's always that type of registration where you can save your user name and password so when you log in you won't have to type it again. Like MSN, etc. --BB Surf Angel.

I'd rather you just come out and say either "No, we're not gonna do it", or "Yeah, we're going to implement registration or at least a n alternate registration-only bb, and we're gonna do it by X date".

Please don't keep asking our opinions and saying you want to keep the crew pleased but not doing anything. Commit man... one way or another. We can respect that.

PPB, where did you dig up that archive link? There's some good stuff in the Way Back Machine, like this:

_______________

They were sitting on my work bench and almost got thrown out this morning, so I took them and scanned them into a floppy so I wouldn’t loose them. Anyway, I ran into a free homepage thing and spent all of about 20 seconds setting this up, so yes it SUCKS, and you will break your neck looking at the pictures because they are tiny and they all came up sideways. I gotta go pick up my kids, so I’ll attempt to straighten it out later. All shots from the mid 70’s taken in front of my house. I only had room for four of them, so for the moment, Thhh thhhh thhhaaaaaaatts allll folks!!
