I saw photos somewhere of what used to be pedestrian tunnels under Great Highway.
Part of me thinks they would be cool if they remained, but realistically, it's probably better that they are gone.

Do they bust out the dozers for sand relocation on an annual schedule? I was home enough in 2022 to watch them move sand all over the north end of the beach after it piled up against the seawall, but we could use some spreading.



Definitely an interesting phenomena. Have you ever tried to stay in position, or even make it into position to get a left off the top of that sandbar at low tide on these middling days? It looks doable, but I've mostly found it impossible. Then I end up half a block down on a closeout.
I have tried with various levels of failure at a similar setup. Another OB special of that peak over there is the one. :bricks:

There were tunnels. And pretty gross as you’d imagine. That said, people also used them for artsy, choir-ish, vocal performances. Sort of cool, I guess. Other factoids - when I moved to town in 1976, there were no stoplights on the Great Highway and there was no ice plant or dune grass, just an expanse of drifting and blowing sand. The beach at Sloat was as wide as any part of the beach and Kelly’s was more of a cove than it is now. More sand making its way south out the Gate.

Same thing happened to me Saturday. Looked clean, nice conditions, and pretty fun on the cams when I woke up, dicked around at home and made coffee and sat around for 30 minutes before heading out, by the time I got down to the beach it was windy, crumbling, not really surfable. C’est la vie.

Friday late afternoon/evening had some beaut conditions though. I’ve been sticking to as literally north as possible on the beach to trade crowds for quality, since I hardly ever seen anyone giving that funky (read: shitty) wedge a go.

Yep, growing up on Ulloa, the tunnel at Taravel was the one I used the most. If you rode your bike to the beach that was the way to get on the sand. They smelled like **** most of the time. And yes there were no stop lights, and no crosswalks on the GH. Drag racing was a thing. Now the supervisor who represents the sunset has put a measure on the ballot to close the GH to cars permanently. As a resident of Pacifica, I'd hate to see it happen, because that is the way I drive to go north into Marin or just to the Richmond. And the way I drive home when working in the northern part of town. Not to mention what this would do to traffic in the avenues, on sunset, and on 19th.

They claim they want to build a park there. I think they really want to build condos to increase the tax base. The powers that be have decided to ruin the sunset with highrises. Even the guy running for supervisor in the mission says he is in favor of building highrises in the sunset. It's no wonder, that dude never set foot on OB. So, the rest of the city, who rarely goes to OB, will likely vote to close it, based on a promise of a park that has no plan, and no funding, in the coldest part of the city.

I'm curious what people who surf there think about closing the GH. When I surfed OB, I usually drove the great to assess where to surf.

Am friends with some people who live on lower Great Highway (a residential street) and within a few blocks of same.

They are not fans of closing the upper Great Highway as it just puts more traffic in the actual neighborhood.

They don't love the current situation with closing it during the weekend, but are willing to compromise if it keeps it open.

I don't love car traffic, but keeping non-local destination cars out of neighborhood seems like a good idea to me, so, keep it open will be my vote this fall.

Mixed feelings about closing the GH.
It is nice to have more open space and no speeding cars on that road.
But the park idea is a joke. They don’t take care of the North end of the beach or the rest of what hey have now. They have plans of having grass. The sand and wind will never let that happen.
The traffic in the neighborhood is really bad when it is closed and the parking is nonexistent. Driving the only other alternative is Sunset which is a mess. No left hand turning and they are taking away turning right and then Uturning.
If they had a good plan for the transition and upgraded the existing traffic measures I would support it but those are promised after they close the GH. Probably pass the measure and the people who live here will get screwed.

Don't live there, but have been there plenty of times in my life. Love the area, but not a fan of closing the highway. Mainly because I'm older now and got that 'I dont like change' disease.

But lmost all these things end up being for the benefit of developers and companies. Never truly benefit for the people.

How do locals feel about everyone parking in the already crowded neighborhood streets? Last time I surfed there, I had to park about 7 blocks up from the beach. Lol

I think the system they have now is working? Parking in the Avenues is getting busier. Happy that they changed the area on lower great highway & Irving to diagonal, got rid of all the long term camping people.

I'm happy with the current compromise of closing GH on weekends.
It's pretty great to be able to take the kids down have all that room to maneuver.


I think there could be reasonable developments to the area to make this unnecessary, but I don't have any faith that they would be reasonably built or built in a reasonable amount of time. They could finish the last 100 feet of the seawall walkway at Noriega, They could build out walking paths and bolster dune retention plans while protecting the already (barely) protected species with low profile, semi permanent walkways and fencing to control foot traffic like they due in other sand dune regions. But alas, I don't think there will be much wherewithal to do that or keep it up.

I don't think there needs to be a beach park and as other people mentioned, there is no budget for it, currently. Small installs along Great Highway would be welcome, but not a large, centralized park area. Build out Sloat in a useable way, build out some of the other areas with a more useable space, but the ability for people to spread out is one of the appeals to the area.

I feel like most of these measures are thinly veiled methods to bypass electoral donation limitations. I think you can have virtually unlimited donation amounts to Propositions and those can be shared with candidates in some form, while donations to candidates are more limited.

I have to constantly remind myself that I'm old, in charge of nothing, and have no voice. I haven't lived on Ulloa since 1976, but still feel a strong connection to the area. So many great times growing up there and when I talk to other people that did, we all agree we had an amazing childhood there. It's hard to see the things you cherished go away.

I'm still salty about Leon's BBQ and Herb's deli being gone. I hate the idea of the GH being closed but I don't live in the city, and don't get to vote. I am on the supe's mailing list and wrote him to let him know I was in opposition to his plan. He wrote back long email saying I likely agreed with many of his other positions. I didn't.

Just another trannie who thinks he knows what is best for the city he didn't grow up in. I can't imagine moving to Iowa and running for office, thinking I could represent those folk's interests. Gotta be some kinda egotist to do that.

I live on the lower great hwy and I’m *generally* for closing the upper great hwy, but with a few caveats.

My preferred approach is the current compromise of closed on the weekends, open on the weekdays, but if I had to choose one or the other, I’d prefer to have the Great Hwy as a park. It’s really spectacular on a nice day to have that area open to pedestrians and see all the happy people and families strolling about.

I’d be for having it closed all the time if SFMTA could make Sunset useable (it’s the least efficient 3 lane road on the face of the earth) and they actually turn it into a park and take good care of it (like they do Chrissy field).

At the end of the day, the parking and traffic is inconvenient but it’s really just a minority of the time. I don’t see it impacting the neighborhood in a meaningful enough way to justify not having the UGH closed and used as a park.

Traffic management on the west side of the city is atrocious. Sunset and 19th are just. fucking. awful. Bad for commuters, the neighborhoods, and the air. I can't think of another major city without a north-south thoroughfare running through it (calling Van Ness "101" does not count). Closing the Great Highway isn't going to make the situation any better. And then, there is the approved plan to add 3500 housing units at Stonestown which will further stress the nearby roads... So the issue I have with GH park proposal is that there's no related traffic plan for the area associated with it - even better timing the lights would be a huge improvement. If there is a holistic plan, I can maybe get on board with it. It's a great theoretical concept.

But damn, if it happens, I'll sure miss driving the GH, looking at the peaks, and easily surveying how they change throughout the season...

I love the Sunset. Lived on the lower highway for a few lucky years.

But I don't like the logistics of a fulltime closure.
- Those NW winds devour infrastructure. They also regularly blow sand everywhere. Park maintenance would be a bitch and expensive.
- How many more people will benefit from weekday access? It seems the vast majority of people are M-Fers in the city and would only be using it on weekends anyhow.
- Traffic would get a lot worse in the neighborhood. Right now, it's not terrible because it's only closed on the weekends. But my memories of the sporadic weekday closures were seeing a steady stream of impatient commuters whizzing down the lower highway. Nerve-wrecking for any parents of children (or dogs even).

They have the best of both worlds right now IMO. Hope they keep it that way.
