An average sized Lancaster county puppy mill of 50-100 dogs generates about $500,000 a year. There are some articles about the Amish puppy breeding um, phenomenon. Nearly every, single, Amish-dominant county in the US (didn’t realize there were still so many, spread far beyond the PA and Ohio counties) has a staggering number of puppy mills per capita.
im not even anti breeding, and they aren’t (getting caught) breaking any laws, since their operations are covered as agricultural. I don’t even mind the large scale of these operations (the big ones have hundreds of dogs in crates in huge metal barns) but they could at the very least treat the dogs FAR more humanely with very little effect on their bottom line. Oh, also, killing bitches after you have literally bred them dry in a crate out back- that’s just monstrous.
apparently very few breed bitches are ever rescued- they’re bred every single heat cycle until they either die, or dry up, at which point they are killed. At least give them a chance. Have big adoption rallies. Get some positive PR to offset the simple fact that they treat these animals, whether it’s legal or not, in a manner that most modern westerners find abhorrent.
Of course there is a huge market for pure breeds like corgis and other popular toy breeds and the funny new crossovers etc.that’s why these guys make so much money from big but bare bones milling Operations. And the demand WILL be served, one way or another, but it can easily and profitably be done, even at scale; with far more humanity.
maybe they could open up their ops to tourists and let kids romp and play with young mothers and puppies, let everyone have Some fun before it’s back to bumping, birthing, and whelping
