Yep. Arguably literacy is now worse than before public schools were established in the early 1800s. The state has even been sued for this and lost. I realize schools suffer from GIGO, but teachers and the schools bear a huge chunk of the blame for this.

Most people I work with are high IQ.

Most who go into the profession really care about the kids.

there is a huge discrepancy between the teachers in college vs the slackers in k-12. I have friends in k-12 that are great teachers but the vast majority are the bottom 1/3 of college graduates that couldn't get a job doing anything else. now they are in charge of indoctrinating our future generation with wokeness at the taxpayers expense, and paid well for it. gotta love socialism!
My sister was a elementary school principal and she says she was blown away by the great work teachers do.
I don't think vast majority being sh!t is accurate. I would guess it would match most professions.

One of the problems is they took away the autonomy of the principal.
I don't like what is going on at the administrative level.
But that is not the teachers.

I think the quality of the teachers tends to match the quality of the students. The quality of both has gone way downhill in the past 30 years. There are still districts with "good schools" which is a real-estate dog whistle for "lots of white and Asian students and only a smattering of blacks and hispanics," but they're becoming rarer and increasingly teaching Woke junk while neglecting the 3 Rs.
I had several smart friends who taught in LAUSD and they quit within 5 years citing dumb students as the reason. One likened them to "the hordes of Mordor."

The old guard of public school teachers retiring this year say that public school has turned into ESL and special needs. The test scores in California definitely reflect this. The public schools follow the curve:
