Was not a fan of the wasted cranks that lived on those benches, but removing the benches is a weird solution.
Plenty of space there for a few of these:

"In the late 1800's, quite a bit much closer to the 1900's than seems comfortable for what we're about to discuss, there was a device placed in a few towns around Maine. This device was a punishment where people had to endure all means of public humiliation and physical discomfort that would serve as a deterrent for vagrancy. Back then of course, those folks were called tramps or hobos. Folks would be locked inside this metal chair for hours on end, and people would constantly harass its occupant."

Interesting bit of history. Can you imagine those guys in cages at Swamis, throwing their feces at passersby?

I don't think they will be getting much distance with the limited mobility. They are definitely at the disadvantage.

There is also the ducking stool equivalent of taking them out on a head high day, strapping them to an 8' gun and turtling them over and over. It might be hard to pick the homeless out of the crowd, though.

Some of the benches are back in a reconfigured state. I guess the city can now say they are doing something about vagrant squatters.
