Some days there are 8 foot semi-standing waves. Dudes that navigate that on the regular are studs and/or nutters.

At the beginning I was wondering what they were doing. They head up and take a wave broadside. Then I realized- the Coasties are blocking for the boater. "Take this one for him." (y) Respect.

I had a close friend stationed up there. Got discharged after he broke vertebra in the shore pound of a unnamed left point break....

That place is the real deal, thankfully never had to fish there when it was rough, makes the good ol Barnegat Inlet like a mill pond.

Oregon Inlet is North Carolina. It's shallow. We rode a shoulder-head high left through there once in the face of a building Gale we had to do the intracoastal waterway Atlantic Ocean-Oregon Inlet-Pamlico-Neus River route on the way to Florida way back early 90's. Depthfinder was blowing up 13, 11, 8, 5, 3' !! I stood on deck doing my best Alex Knost impression as it happened. People who live/fish there have it wired, but to the unsuspecting or uninitiated... I don't know.
Oregon State? I wouldn't wanna find out what their bad days are like.

Surfed Orgeon Inlet many moons ago with a buddy.
Hairs on back of neck standing straight up feeling whole time.
Buddy saw something and got out. Tried to flag me down but I didn't see him.
He told me once I came in. Felt super fishy.

I've been out on those 47's in some decent sized stuff back in my CG days but nothing breaking like the Humboldt vid.
Those things self right when they flip over. I believe you have to flip one to become a qualified CG surfmen.

Those old wooden boats from the 1950's with the narrow sterns handled it quite well, compared with the top heavy new fiberglass boats.

Outgoing tide... Looks ugly.

Just spent a week at Westport, WA. Outgoing tide and 6-7 @10 seconds with additional onshore 15mph, makes conditions that can sink boats. I only ran our boat in and out at slack tide and it was still kinda messy.

If you want to read a good story about CG rescue, check out the book The Finest Hours. My dad was a kid in Chatham when that rescue occurred.
