I have a SubDriver swallow tail and it has the best range of any HPSBish board I ever used. It is just as ridable at waist high as it is when it's slightly overhead. Very user friendly as well.

Thanks for the input.

Seems to track with what I’m learning: the SB is a versatile shape in the lower wave range. Which unfortunately isn’t really what I need right now.

The pro and bro models are pretty different. I'd say it has pretty round rails considering the volume the board holds. It's always been a shape that has felt bigger in my hands than the volume would indicate. Yes, you can make a sub driver work in HH+ waves when it's made to accommodate that. For instance, I had one that I rode a decent amount in Indo that was 5'11 x 19.25 x 2.4 and it went surprisingly well. I also have a 5'9 x 19.88 x 2.4 sub driver swallow that struggles in anything over SH at Ocean Beach. I honestly think a stock pyzel ghost at 6'1 or a shadow at 6'2 might be a better bet as easy-to-surf shortboards than can accommodate SH to HH+.
I must have the pro dims because my rails are significantly nipped and tucked.

I’d like it to fit in as a shoulder to head and a half MPSB (M denoting moderate. My surfing is decidedly not H).
I don’t need this board to grovel per se, I also have lots of boards for that.

Where I get Leary of the HPSBs is when they need a wave with push to not be turds under normal human feet. Where I live we often get size all winter but lots of short period inconsistent shape. And I reckon a guy from SoCal would scoff at my idea of glassy haha.
I want my boards to help me enjoy my time in the water, and for me that means getting lots of waves and working on my basic performance maneuvers like wraps, snaps, floaters etc.

Sheesh, buying a short board shouldn’t be this difficult.
I've never really redlined my Sub Driver in terms of hold (bro-dims squash 1.0). I had it in what I would call a little overhead on some trips - size disclaimer I am an East Coaster.

If your primary concern is HPSB need push to not be turds, that kind of sounds like HPSB tend to be under-volumed or over-rockered. Avoid those two situations.

"Short period inconsistent shape" that sounds like flatter faces?
Do you have no problems chasing down shifting goldilocks takeoff spots (assumption my own) in 1.5xOH on MPSB?

It obviously depends on the wave, but if you looking for something to perform well in 1.5OH waves I would pick driver over subdriver. If you are riding real short period waves at that size I would choose a different shape altogether.

Love it. This is like like going to therapy for the anxiety of surf board selection.

Over rockered/under volumed has been real which is why I’m striving to avoid th situations. Full rails can be tough for me in fast surf too.

I have a lot of shitty beach break that can show many personalities on a single wave let alone within a session. Late drop to soft shoulder to double up close out, soft takeoff to milking it until it jams on a bar and runs, and everything in between except lined up consistency.

Some points and reefs too that are more consistent when they break, and can have proper good surf, but those days are fewer.

I can say that I’m actually pretty good at finding and getting waves, and boards in this category I’ve had haven’t impeded that process.

Interesting. What do you reckon?

Have you ever tried an HS Untitled? It's a really good, versatile all-arounder that can handle a wide range of conditions. The rails are a little fuller and the deck is a bit flatter than I would typically look for in a board but despite those features I was pleasantly surprised with how hp it was while being user friendly at the same time. Sounds like it would really suit what you're describing here.

You can order them custom if you want.......don't have to get a pop-out version.

SaboTaj bro dims or little wing?
I guess I looked past the Sabotaj as its outline and tail screamed hollow reef to me. But some research suggests perhaps this pony has more than one trick?

In fact I read an older thread where Koolaid and Freeride76 both review it, differently, but favourably.

Actually went back to my Sabotaj - this time as a quad- and really enjoyed it, all over again.

very good shortboard.

Just has a bit too much overlap for me with specialised good wave borts- but if I was allowed one board to take to Indo would definitely consider.

Was between the Sabo Taj and the Ghost, went with a 6'0 ghost goes well but want a little more paddle, for the hard offshores we get when good. What is everybody opinion on oversizing either board to a 6'4(5'9 160)

sub driver 2.0 swallow 5'11 x 19.5 x 2.44
driver 2.0 round 6'2 x 19.25 x 2.44
both around 30l
me 1.88m at 80kg (6'2 at 175lbs in freedom units)
driver is 4+4/6 with carbon strip, SD regular 4+4/4

really stoked how the came out.

I surfed a 5'9 swallow uber driver and a 6'1 squash driver 2.0 for the last year and a half, figured those two would give me even more range. the uber driver had a pretty narrow sweet spot regarding wave size and shape, I'm hoping that the sub driver has a similar bottom end but holds the rail a bit better when there's some push. really, really liked the driver squash though, i hope it feels just as magic with an extra inch and a round tail.
well, covid will keep me landlocked for a another month or so :violin:

such a sick duo bro, how they goin?

I also read your glowing review of the pyzalien 2. Would love to hear your opinions on the two.

@Leonardo

The sub driver was one of my all time favorite boards for sure. Rode it until it fell apart...I went on to try some other boards but will definitely order another one at some point.

The driver round was meant as a semi step up and went just fine, but I switched to a ghost for the more solid days. I do have a shorter, wider driver 2 squash as hpsb now though.

Big fan of the driver series, will have to have a look at the yet to be released stub 3.0 driver too (sits between driver and sub driver if there even is a niche)

I never really connected with my SD2.Mostly due to the Lightspeed build. Also wish I had gone shorter. Thing just never felt right. P2 is excellent. Thigh-couple feet OH. One board quiver for east coast. Is a staple in my quiver now.

The Sabotaj is an awesome all-around hp shortboard.

Can definitely say from experience that the Sabotaj is highly capable from SH to HH+.

I had one that was 6'1 x 19.25 x 2.6 at 33.2L (I think) and it was an excellent board for solid waves at OB.
