For how small of a shaper he is I feel like I see a lot of Brink boards on the used rack.

He seems more like an artist/craftsman than a guy who makes good surfboards.
Designing and making surfboards IS an art form and a craft. Design and small volume manufacturing in any field is an art form. I’m completely unfamiliar w Brink, but from these vids he comes across as very thoughtful, curious n perfectionist surfboard design and builder.

What I'm trying to say is the boards seem like intentional art projects and less like surfboards.

I thought Schroff was gonna act more like Webber did, and in fact he was the one to suggest they used the haipto crypto as the base for their board collaboration. I thought that was pretty cool from him. but then he was like, do you even know how to handshape??? hahahah

Brink seems very intelligent and humble so of course I went online and check out his webpage. Have you guys seen his board order form?

Yeah, I took a look yesterday. Didn't know how to answer some of the questions...

Met Donald in 2013, shortly after he moved here and opened his factory/shop in Dana Point. I simply told him to build me an asymmetrical small wave board and pretty much gave him free reign. It came out pretty good but was too wide and much too thick for me, especially the rails. I also should’ve gone with fin boxes because there wasn’t enough fin area for the board’s volume. Lots of sliding during bottom turns so it was tricky to get back up into the pocket and face of the wave. Figured it out after a few, but it didn’t really turn as I’d hoped. Great guy to work with but would order something more HP(thinner) if doing it again. Ultimately had a few decent sessions on it, but nothing great. I sold it shortly after.97D1A311-12B3-49BF-AA41-EA427823E4D6.jpeg0091B120-AFAB-4274-9585-E4341EC4B1A5.jpeg01E5D863-750C-4A3F-BAE3-10A7E88D3126.jpegD6724DCD-B8D6-4B38-8711-DA76912C5597.jpeg76D8D2E8-8106-44D8-81E3-CF0A375B9DBC.jpegAE4B5E8C-FBDD-4AFD-8998-1F875207552B.jpeg86DE5EAE-581C-4985-B56B-1F7E3FDAF9C4.jpegE2D68B94-78A4-4975-9C33-1B6CFF7C3486.jpeg

I've talked w him a few times bc he's married to my neighbor's sister. He's definitely a thoughtful, genuine guy. Super artsy and creative. His fins that he brings to the boardroom show are works of art. Before this collab, he said he wanted to focus on spending more time w each customer, surfing w them, and giving them a complete experience before shaping a board for them, rather than mass produce boards. Wonder if he's going to try to keep that model, while pumping out some asyms w Matt. I hope so, and he deserves any success he reaps.

I filled out the order form and received a very thoughtful response from Donald. His boards are twice what he was charging in 2019 and since I’ve been almost exclusively on Varials this past few years, it’s not the easiest decision to try an unknown shape in EPS/Epoxy when I can get a carbon Varial for two hundred less.

He seems open to Varial, but that’s just going to raise the cost substantially. He only handshapes and said Varial’s fumes make me feel “high”.

The price of admission is pretty high with Mr. Brink’s borts. If you get one that doesn’t work for you, you’re out some considerable coin. It’s enticing since he seems so passionate and intent on providing the best product possible, but I know how picky I am about borts.
