I'm not convinced that is sciatica, but you likely have some other spinal condition that impinges on tissue with that activity. If you've done your rest, stretches, local care (ice, heat, ointments whatever), and you still have knife-like pains after a couple of months it deserves professional review.

was jogging about 20 + miles a week and jumping a lot of rope and surfing a lot

with the surf season starting in the last month i have barely ran or jumped rope - just surfing lots

back way better w/o jogging and jumping rope

Right...but how do we explain the large degree of the population with similar or worse pathologies that are walking around pain free?
Good question. It may be that they’re shy one trip over the falls and a bounce off the bottom for an adjustment to the dark side. I made my problem worse over time.

Faulty pain perception. Over and under reaction of a falible system.

The big tell is atrophy and numbness.
