I made a pool skating film with Salba called Chlorine around the same time (2001-2), which features now demolished Salton Sea marina pool. (Marina was built by Albert Frey for those who care)
For some reason we shot in the middle of the summer and to make things bearable, we decided to shoot at night. Of course we didn't plan of bird sized bugs that flocked to the light.
It was a stinky, sweaty nightmare.
Salton Sea was a pretty crazy place even 20 years ago, a lot of well preserved mid-century ruins and at that time, slowly dying fish were still floating on the surface.
Today, it's somewhat gentrified, the marina is now a "visitor's center" and the pool is gone. The rotting Texaco sign that used to poke out of the water is gone. The nearby motel is gone and many of the structures left over from the Salton Sea hayday don't exist anymore.
I recently went scouting for shooting locations and found nothing interesting. Progress, I guess.

Couple of shots of Reuler at the SS pool at 1:40

controversial though: Albert Frey built container homes 60 years before everyone else caught on

also, I FKN LOVE THIS

The World's Most Extraordinary Homes on Netflix has an episode where the home is built around this massive vertical granite slab on a hillside....it's worked beautifully in to a seating area around a hearth.

My dad used to moto and camp and fish out there a lot.

Now it's a trip, and it stinks, and has a Trona vibe.

Just drove through Calexico and Ocotillo last week, returning from Baja....
