that still means the city is spending money to enforce federal laws.
those cells don't build themselves, and the guards don't work out of the kindness of their hearts.
They're in a cell anyway for what they were charged with, idiot. We're talking about a phone call to immigration.
if they're being charged for something more serious like murder they will be held and tried. if found guilty, they will be sent to prison.

if an illegal immigrant is in jail (which if you wernt aware is different than prison), a city government should not be required to spend money on him/her waiting for the fed to come pick them up. jails are already overcrowded as it is, and are incredibly expensive to run. if the fed were willing to kick down money for local governments to do this, that would be a completely different story. but this is just how our government works. if you dont like it, you can get out.

for the sake of disclosure, i don't really even feel that is the best justification for sanctuary cities. i just knew that would resonate best with casamurgienta/dirtyhouse77 (i think they're the same person)

the majority of illegal immigrants dont cause trouble. sanctuary cities allow illegal immigrants to cooperate with police to suss out all the bad apples without fear of deportation.

whatever dude. mistakes were made, we'll correct them and move on. that's life.
Hand-picked from the Bush administration handbook?
you're a boring troll.
Apparently that's not the only troll he has. He just went from 1 star to 3.
thanks, but no time for trolling here.

My dirtyhouse777 handle got banned a while back... by Mike Davis (sez Bassy). Interestingly enough, i thought it was because of my antics on the SUPER surfboards thread, but when I realised my final post was a whack at SUPs...

any time you say "so what you're basically saying" then sumarize the other persons argument, it's not called debating. it's called talking to yourself.

also known as a strawman argument.

anyways, if you read the rest of the post you would have seen that i was playing the devils advocate with that argument.

i'm sorry if you're having trouble understanding a nuanced POV. maybe if you studied a little harder and took advantage of the opportunities presented to you when you were younger those illegals wouldnt be such a threat

quite a few police chiefs, going against their normal political inclinations, are supporters of sanctuary cities because it makes enforcement of those communities much easier.

see: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-06-19-immigration-enforcement_x.htm

The group said helping identify those suspected only of being in the USA illegally could backfire.

"We have spent many years ... getting special communities to talk to us, to report crime, to be witnesses," said Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt. "If we stop individuals (to ask about immigration status), we would lose all of that."

The association — including police chiefs from Los Angeles, Detroit, Seattle and Miami — said most departments can't afford to spend time quizzing immigrants. Members fear that "the call for local enforcement of immigration laws signals the beginning of a trend towards local police agencies being asked to enter other areas of federal regulation or enforcement."

I know you pour drinks for a living, while considering yourself intelligent and open minded -looking down at others for not sharing your opinion. I thought the strength of San Francisco was allowing people to have the choice to express themselves however they wanted to, but if it doesn't fit your views - it's all wrong. Do you want to read some more Steinbeck, or perhaps write some crap dribble to have a quasi-personality on a message board? When your wife or child gets hurt by a situation close to the one this post if referring to, you will cry your sensitive little eyes out. This is all learned from your postings on this board. You're such a chump.

Gibberish.

Investigating and reporting the immigration status of a VIOLENT FELON has nothing to do with getting witness reports or reporting crime.

As for people being scared to report crime bnecause they are illegal? I used to work the cops beat in a city of around 100,000 people with a large population of illegal immigrants. It wasn't a sanctuary city. These people were more than willing to report crime and complete witness statements. They all know the deal: be good, and you're good.

Most law enforcement agencies have a similar policy. Further, they simply don't have the resources to check immigration status. So the only time they bother with it is if they pick someone up for f*cking up.

It's simple, and it's about humane as you can get.

i agree with you, and my second response was not directed to you at all. my first post was commenting on the specific situation, then that idiot above strawmanned me to a ridiculous degree. im guessing he didnt realize the difference between jail and prison.

it sounds like what you describe is a sanctuary city in practice. it probably just was not politically viable to call it that in FL. either way, the immigrants know if they're good they can talk to the cops and thats all i really care about.

if someone is convicted of a violent crime in the US, they should go to prison in the US. it does not make sense to take them to the border and drop them off. they'd be back in a week. after they serve their time, since prisons are not run by cities, they could call ICE and take care of them.

you do realize that people go to jail without ever being charged with a crime, right?

do you know the difference between jail and prison?

sometimes suspects are detained in jail, but then after further investigation are found to be completely innnocent. if that person is an illegal immigrant, the city (who runs jails, prisons are state or federal) should not be required to pay for the extended detainment (which is really expensive, you can google it) while they wait for ICE to come. a lot of jails are overcrowded in the first place, and the city can't divert money away from other parts of their budget to build a bigger jail.

i think you started with the personal attacks, by the way.

i think you really nailed where the confusion was between us (specific vs. general).

anyways, i dont take what people say about me here personally. if i did, i already would have stopped posting.

and i surf with my right foot forward too.
