oh, that's just the presentation. CA is oozing surf culture since the beginning.
Maybe this is a case of the grass is greener over there.

Once upon a time, there were surf movies traveling to theaters up and down the coast. Now you can go to a Patagonia store and safely watch the Lopez movie. Even in the surf-starved city of SF surf shops would throw parties with music and movies, occasionally. Now w/ the surfer population is at an all-time high all that has vanished. Last Fall/Winter you could walk the neighborhood and see a few garages converted into +/- 50 board storage hangout facilities. The people there w/ license plates from Wyoming, Idaho... Wonder if those will reappear once we get waves again:violin: That's where the surf culture has gone around here.
If you know what's happening in CA please share.

I worked a couple of construction jobs with a crew that consisted of two brothers from New Zealand and one Australian (the bloody ocker). They all surfed. They all came to California convinced that the waves were so much better here. We all came to the conclusion that you know the reality of home, but you only know the dream of the other side of the fence. They told me about watching movies and seeing articles about California with all these perfect waves and were convinced California was the place to be. They were here in the late 80's and they did catch a great winter....

Santa Cruz chaps! Haut, Pearson Arrow. Cowell's beach. Steamer Lane.

Oceanside - Barry Snyder estimated there were 50 shaping machines in that city alone, the mecca of surboard design and custom pu/pe. San Clemente - home to Lost surfboards.

being from a similar era you might relate...

i was talking with jim the genius a bit ago about the south bay scene in the 70's. back then surf was a way of life not an activity ending in ing.

jim went off on the state of it now- saturday they go surfing, sunday its kayaking, mondays hiking, tuesday biking, paddlieboarding wednesdays.. its all part of an "active lifestyle". he had one for every day of the week.

the days of california surf culture are long gone now. ir was a place and time can never happen here again.

surf culture is lame and most surfers are dorks. what exactly is surf culture anyways? wearing rip curl shirts and CI hats? making sure everyone knows you're a surfer? the WSL? woodys? Aloha shirts? surf culture is just people trying to sell an image. yeah it's crowded as sh1t, it's not like that genie is going back in the bottle though.

It's annoying hearing people complain about the crowd out in the water-- then go in! You're part of the crowd. instead of complaining about the demise of 'surf culture' and the influx of idiots at all the spots, maybe start regulating your spots a little bit?

One of the reasons that things have gotten to the point where they are at a lot of spots in CA is that everyone is so passive and nobody wants to speak up. Tell the people on soft tops to kick rocks off the main peak and go surf the inside. Some dude you've never seen before at your local is catching too many waves or paddling past you to the peak? drop in on him. then tell him to go fvck himself. If you love surfing so much, stop complaining so much and DO YOUR PART

I think what he's referring to is there are more surfers but less people in the water that live and breathe surfing.

It's just a hobby for a lot of people.

Something they do as part of "keeping active" every few weeks...

If a job offer with a 10% salary increase comes up in Columbus, OH next week they're taking it without a second thought.

That is modern surf culture and it has nothing to do with surfwear, it's outlook and attitude.

I'm fine with it being just a hobby for a lot of people. Do we really want all those hobbyists to start living and breathing surfing? Pumping out even more backyard twins and midlengths? Buying up all the used '95 rangers and all the mismatched camper shells?

That might contribute to some reconstitution of a modern surf culture, but then it would be even more crowded and lineups even more oversaturated with new regulars.

I'd rather they stay hobbyists and surf culture continue to die. It's not like that's going to cause most of us to quit surfing, when it's been our lifelong, endless pursuit and passion.

They're not going anywhere; best we can do is learn to deal with it in our own ways (if we haven't done so already), and try to discourage as many people from living and breathing surfing, as possible. Or, we can just pine for the days of yore, of course.

A) You are a part of surf culture.

B) Nobody said they wanted hobbyists to live and breathe surfing, lol. I said they perhaps are the main influence in modern surf culture.
