Bottom line, that sh!t did not change the vote and make Hillary lose. If anything she was a huge beneficiary of the Billy Bush tape. I’d say that swayed more votes than just about anything last election. Without that Hillary would have lost much much worse.

I would say that if someone bases their politics on an aspirational view of society (we're better than that) it's going to lead to a different set of goals and objectives than a realpolitik view of society (we are that and have always been like that).

Social values based on how someone thinks people should act will be different than social values based on how people actually do tend to act.

It did help spawn a whole new vagina hat fashion statement.

How many here bought one and marched?

There are a few erBB regulars who are perfect illustrations of this strategy having worked.

HINT: Russian influence was (and continues to be) both pro-Trump and pro-Bernie. (Or pro- far right and far left if you prefer to take personalities out of it.)

Get real. Who here do you think gets even part of their news from FB or any other social media platform? Aside from the one notable turncoat who thinks he got left by the left, who here even has a different worldview in 2017 than they had in 2015?

Indirectly? Every single one of us who has a FB account.

And it's not about changes in worldview. It's about movement on the spectrum toward the extremes.

Have you noticed that all the stories that blow up on social media get threads here too?

You're mixing and matching issues. Nobody said the adds did anything other attempt to create discord in America as a way to undermine the overall process.

I'm more left than I was in 2015, largely because the right's gone more right than I'd prefer.

Yeah, but the rights gone more right because you've gone more left.

Interesting. I find myself more centrist over the same time period. While the right's gone a lot more right (in all the worst ways - whatever happened to limited gov?) the left's picked up more of a socialist utopian streak.

I always thought FB picked their content up from the political sites that some of our regulars seem to follow. More effect than cause.

I think it's downright humorous to complain about the Russians adding to the divisiveness of identity politics which were created by the left based entirely on that hostile divisiveness as their primary mode of operation.

If anything, I think the left is working on becoming the primary victim of its own success.

What would these identity politics even be without their inherent divisiveness? How would they even function without the mindless tribal teamplay and ad hominems?

you'll probably get agreement that it's not a good thing, but only if you allow that agreement to begin with "It had no impact on Trump's election, but...."

I'm not shrugging it off. Punish the guilty. Up to and including Trump if you can make that connection.

Well 44% of Americans get news from Facebook, there's other numbers but that is the most conservative and realistic one ive seen. So whether or not anyone here gets their news from it, a good percentage of the US do. Also, none of us here can say with any certainty how much of an influence the russia/Facebook had on the election.

Go for it. I don't care what happens to Trump.

And then we can turn our attention to the members of the domestic press who actively engaged in fake news for political gain because THEIR influence was a lot more direct.

This is taken from the standard elitist playbook, taking away agency and responsibility from the individual.

I can not believe people here can shrug off a foreign power interfering in our elections.
It's unprecedented. Doesn't that bother you? Forget about who Putin was helping, it's Russia involved in our political process. Doesn't that concern you? Or do you think that this is more partisan "fake news"?
Yeah that's kind of what's most amazing to me about this whole thing. I think people are just too scared to speak negatively against their own political affiliations; even though it's not they're afraid of sullying trumps presidency.
