I got lucky and found a great rescue dog thats a pure breed. The dog is awesome and hasnt left my side since I got him. At work he got out and didnt notice right away and someone next door called in at the rescue place that they found him. Our name tag fell off the day before. The rescue representative flipped out on me and let me have it.

So last night he was in the back yard and broke through the fence. My wife had taken the collar off since he put on weight so he could be more comfortable. He's chipped and someone brought him to the vet to get scanned. The rescue place is on the info so they were contacted. I've had him for a couple months now and the Rescue Organization has threatened to not return him because i put him in danger. Thats far from the reality since the dog is part of our family.

Is this for real and do they have a legit reason to do this. The contract was signed by me that states he should have the collar on at all times and also that they can take him back if the dogs abused or neglected. It doesnt state that they can take him for getting loose. And isnt the chip there for this reason in particular??!

Legally the dog is mine since he's registered at the city to me.

Anyone have experience with this or can I show up with a cop to get my dog back from this Nazi tree hugger?

I don't know, but you've lost the dog twice in two months. (and both times someone other than you found the dog) Maybe he'd be better off with someone else.

I know it looks bad but its doubtful that dog would find a better home. He is a dog after all and will do what dogs do. Who would expect a dog to get over a 7' fenced in yard. I'm not exactly the first person whos dog got loose.

These rescue people are a completely different breed of people though. No empathy or rationality. Just completely wacky.

There are three agencies that pick up dead dogs off the roadways around here. 2 private ones and Caltrans that picks them up off the freeways. Once mine got out and I couldn't find him for three days. Luckily a neighbor had him. Like you I had taken the collar off for comfort. I was calling around to see of anyone had picked up my dog. The one (remember there's 3) agency I talked to said they picked up as many as 700 dead dogs per month..and that was in a 20 square mile radius. Not sure but that could have something to do with them being a bit pissed about your dog getting loose.

They didn't expect that the tiger in SF couple years back could scale a 14' wall..but obviously something motivated it. I'm thinking if there is a tiger still in that enclosure they've extended the walls. Maybe instead of being upset towards them go there and let them know that you've taken steps to make sure this does not happen again.

Thanks JJR. I just spoke with a friend who's in the rescue business and they've reiterated that he is legally mine and I should show up to take him back. They can pursue it in small claims court if they want to.

Problem is I'm not sure exactly wherethe person who has him is. I've attempted to reconcile it since last night over the phone and over email even suggesting a sit down meeting at our place with them to show our home situation and theyve always ended it with how upset they are and are going to hang up. Granted its a tough call on their end. I've even asked their opinion on how to better keep him from doing this again and being proactive. Lesson learned.

I'm just waiting at this point to hear from them. Just a frustrating thing to deal with really.

a lot of times they get bored hearing the same old stories over and over. maybe you gave him a really dumb name like 'dakota' or 'nooter' or something too. he was probably just fed up.

are you totally sure it's a male?

good luck anyway...

I've seen my dog go all par-kor on a 6' cornered wall to get out of a yard before. I've seen him climb (quite literally, climb) an 8' training fence to get out. Both in foreign environments.

I have a one of those "kid fences" (the wooden ones that you can slide out to make them longer) that's about 18" and when I put that on the porch or our stairs, he never ever goes past it.

Dammit.
Sorry bro..but when you deal with tragedy first hand it's hard to look at it from your perspective. You have an obligation as a dog owner to not only keep society safe..but to keep your dog safe as well.

Last october on the night before halloween I had the displeasure of watching a beautiful great dane get killed in front of my house. I heard him get hit the first time then heard wailing/screaming that almost sounded like a little girl it was so high pitched. I ran out of the house and out onto the street just in time to see him get hit by the second car. I came to a stop realizing I was too late. The car hit him and literally ran him over causing both left side wheels of the car to come about 6 or 8" off the ground as the dog was over a hundred lbs. The car went into a fishtail slide and almost into a parked car. Of course neither car stopped. Just kept going which was traumatizing in itself. I attempted to run into the street and pull the dog out of there as more cars were bearing down and not slowing down. It was almost dark and the dog was dark grey. No one could see it.

Of course being in shock the dog spun his head around and clamped onto my wrist like nothing I've ever felt. He finally let go and I had blood gushing out of several puncture wounds on my wrist and forearm. Another witness attempted to get him the rest of the way out of the road and was also bit. It finally took about 5 of us to begin diverting cars around the wounded dog who lay in the right lane making the most god aweful sounds as he slowly died in front of us. At some point he was very close to death and we felt comfortable enough to retrieve the info off of his collar. we called the number and turned out the girl was just 3 houses further up my street. She was there in minutes..but could only lay there and hold him as he took his last breaths.

There was nothing any of us could do. We asked how he had gotten loose. She said she was watching her one year old and had left the door open for only a couple minutes. The dog wandered out and down the street into coast hwy. Just doing what dogs do right? Well she said that in the 5 years that they had owned the dog he had never done that. Only takes once my friend. And they're gone. And many other things can happen as well.

She was nice enough to cover my medical expenses. I went to urgent care and just got stitched up. It wasn't that much. But she could have been sued by both myself and the other person bit for negligence. What if that swerving car had actually hit that parked car? And inside was a mother and her 3 kids? All because dogs do what they do. It's your responsibility to make sure this doesn't happen. Besides it's no fun losing a member of YOUR family either. The owners of the dog are very sad they loved him so much. I'm still having problems with my wrist 8 months later. Easily avoided.

Sorry for the rant but if it makes you keep track of your buddy at all times it was worth it.

If you make them wear funny outfits they'll stay home rather than suffer humiliation in public.

This is a very American sounding problem.

Why don't we feel this way about our cows?

What's cool is now you have literally rescue your rescue dog from the rescue people.

I'm thinking night vision goggles and smoke bombs.

Yeah, I hate it when cows are running around on the freeway or crapping on my lawn.
