All my materials came in. Also got word we will not be going in for work until at least May1, although now they have set up a daily schedule for video instruction, conferencing, and professional development, so I can't hike off into the wilderness like Leaverite. Might as well make the board. I'm gluing up the blank today and seeing if I have enough wood left over from previous projects to do a balsa railed board. Seems like I do.

The blank is imperfect. I found two in my driveway a couple of years ago. I suspect it was afoaf, who felt guilty about giving me teflon coated fiberglass cloth, which resulted in the delaminataion of two fine shapes- one was a 7-1 bonzer that worked sooo good the few times I rode it. Anyways, thanks(?) for the blanks afoaf.

Still have no idea what t make...IMG_3674.JPG

Well . Where are the holes in your current quiver
If you follow the Surf Doc forum, which I know most people wouldn't unless you're injured, I injured my back (see "10 Myths about lower back pain" thread). I'm also 58, almost 59 years old. My 6-0 twinzer has been my daily driver for the beaches for years now but the last few times the surf was up it has felt really squirrely and every take off (when it's head high or over) felt like dropping out of the sky. So I want a SoBay beach break, daily driver. 32l was always my happy volume number but I think I need to go up. In the end, because of dissatisfaction with my 6-0, I was riding a mid length and was not happy about that either- just too long. So I'm thinking about a 6-4, with volume about 38l... I've been perusing board manufacturer's websites and looking at dims and volumes. I was surprised how thick boards are now. 2-1/4" was always my go to thickness, maybe 2-3/8" for a step up and now I'm, seeing 2-3/4" for boards 6-4.... remember when 6-2 was the standard pro shortboard? Now it's the "big guy" board...

I realized I was out of disposable gloves. Not good when bagging and glassing. Went to Home Depot and Lowes looking for them. All out. On my way home I spied a Pep Boys, cut across 3 lanes of traffic (luckily there was no traffic) and got the last box. Trader Joes was still totally out of toilet paper. People are crazy. Or times are crazy.

So you are in need of HPSB type outline @ about 38l. ?
easy to do at 6-2 with the right cross section if you don't want to stretch out to 6-4

So stocked to see this happening. What's up w the glue up? Can you tell us what you're doing w this blank?

Even w stringerless blanks, I like having a glue line and transferring my rocker template into the blank to start.

I couldn't decide between a twin and a thruster so I tossed a coin. Thruster won. So I'm templating my board. I watched a video somewhere about 13" nose and 15" tail so I tried that but it looks too curvy (photo). It is 20-3/4 wide so I'm going to try and knock that down to 20-1/2. Also, the 13" nose looks forced so I'm going to knock that down to 12-3/4". Will post results later.

When templating I usually just put width (this one at dead center), nose and tail marks and then use the blue tape to "draw" the outline. It makes it easy to see and easy to change if I don't like it. Never mind the warbles in the nose. That's just the tape resisting the inside curves..

So I pulled it in to 20-1/2 and the nose down to 12-3/4 but the tail still looked too curvy to me (first photo).
So I moved the center point up to 1-1/4 above center (second photo). That looks better. When I put it on the stands the tail it definitely did not look too curvy. Funny how perspective changes things. Almost looks too straight. I think I live with this outline. Pencil and cut.

This is a tool I used a lot when I worked at Dencho Marine. We used to spend day after day after day, 8 hours a day, sanding molds or hulls with these blocks (Imagine having to fair- smooth to perfection- a 70 foot sailboat hull).
I find it perfect to clean up and flatten the bottom of the board before adding bottom contours.
