I made the mistake of accepting the challenge of a couple guys 10-15 years younger than me to do 20 non stop pushups every 45 minutes. The bet was that the first failure had to jump off the cliff at Steamer Lane and swim to the stairs. In trunks.

The water felt kinda nice after all that.
20 is not that many and 45 minutes give you more than enough time to rest. It seems like you'd be at that all day long.

my shoulders were so bad at one point that I couldn't do 1, I was in constant pain, couldn't sleep on my side and I am a side sleeper and was really bummed about my paddling. Had some cortisone shots over the years and when the pain went down, I was able to start doing a few pushups and pull ups. Now I throw everything at my shoulders, good diet, yoga, weekly accupuncture, prone paddle boards, been a couple years since my last cortisone shot. I do sets of 20 - 35 pushups 2- 5 times a day. Usually 20 before swimming and treading water in the pool for 20 minutes. My paddling and pop ups are obviously better when my shoulders are feeling good and I try to surf 5 days a week.

IMHO, It's not about how many. It's more about form and pace. You can destroy yourself with a very small number of pushups if you do them strict and slow. If I get too involved with how many, I start using momentum and gravity. Slow negatives.
In 2019 I was doing 100+ a day
My rotator cuff was giving me trouble so I took time off
Now I do 40-60 a day but slow and steady, more progress and less wear and tear.
10-15 slow and focused are better than 20 fast for sure

We were there from 6am-6pm.

I think I made it to lunch time before I said screw it and took the dip.

So somewhere above 100 and probably less than 200

do lots of them.
if you put your feet up on something high you can do much less for a greater effect, efficiency is the key principle to success in anything. work smarter not harder, a tough concept for some to grasp ;)

I am in the gym 4 days a week and 7 days a week working on hip and spinal mobility and stretching. I am stronger and moving better than at any point since my 20s.

There is something to be said for the mental aspect of working harder.

I know a marathon training plan that says to just run until you reach your "discomfort zone" and slowly increase the time you spend in that zone.

dang I got back and forth with pushups and wish I could figure out a program. twice seperated left shoulder and bursitis in the other has limited me significantly. at times I can do pushups for days then all of a sudden I'm hurting and have to nurse it for several days. Shoulders suck

distance running is stupid, much like doing excess push ups are to build strength and muscle

sprinter vs distance runner

There’s only so much you can accomplish doing push ups vs skill based body weight training aka gymnastics

I don't know what they're called, but I like the ones where you go all the way down to the floor, raise your hands off the floor, then push back up. When you stop supporting your body weight with your hands, your body mass drops a little lower, makes the return a little harder. Harder is good, within reason.:)

I started doing those. They say it adds 10% more range of motion. You definitely can't do as many compared to regular push ups.

The military has adopted them in their fitness test.

When I was in the military the PT test was 2 minutes of push ups, two minutes of sit ups and a 2 mile run. I think is was something like 70 pushups and 80 setups in 2 minutes to max it. You had to max the PT test to stay in my unit so to this day I can still do 80-100 push ups in two minutes.
