Can confirm both these things. Ideally you go when the incoming tide is in the morning when the offshores are less extreme. We had the window in the early afternoon and the wind was nuts, you had to be under the lip and sometimes you'd still get blown out if the nose lifted too much. Outgoing tide is also brutal current wise.the wind was, literally, too hard offshore and made it challenging. We did hear you don’t want outgoing tide there at all.
agreed. several hour drive from one spot to another. Started going to colorados maybe 15 years ago and been many times-- only went to sandino once for a day trip and it was because forecast was too big (10-15)+ for colorados with sh!t wind. Was a cool adventure, fun spot, swell was still large up there with plenty of wash throughs and tons of current but easy to get waves off the random crowd-- larger waves felt like snowboarding, smaller ones that would hit the reef right were hollow and rippable.you're much better off at colorados imo, despite the crowd.
if i remember correctly it's a hike from colorados to puerto sandino. and if you only go for 2 days not sure you have a good chance to catch that particular wave good. watch the forecast and whatnot.
i'd explore the area around colorados more with that time
Puerto is super fun if you get it good, just north of there are fun beach breaks. There are some other slabs little reef breaks and a jetty wave just south. Like anywhere if there are waves, you will have a good time there in that area. Where are you staying?Bringing this thread back alive for my postponed trip is going to be next week and our hookup at Colorados fell through and we have decided to go with the original plan of going to Puerto Sandino. Pretty excited to give this area a try and should be a pretty easy trip considering the airport pickup, meals provided on top of the surfing. I have to admit, a little bit of my soul hurts seeing how it could potentially be epic just a couple hours from my house with the forecasted hurricane going by. But I've got to let that go and know I am going to be surfing for 6 days straight and it should be pretty fun. At this point the forecast isn't calling for anything major but I'm guessing the predicted 3-4 ft at 16sec should fill in nicely. Winds look pretty good as well. The first part of our trip what JDJ said above, early morning low tide. If anyone who's been there has any tips or suggestions I'm all ears. I'll report back after the trip.
