La Punta looks pretty packed these days.

If it's big and you are pulling in, you're fine.

Friend just got back. Punta is over. Crowded and surf lessons. It's bad.

Out front is out front. It's fuckin gnarly. Bring a really big board and your balls and be in good shape.

I used to do Pascuales every summer, only been to Puerto twice, but pushing 50, giant Mexican beach breaks seem less enticing for a surf trip. You forget just how heavy they can be. You need to be on your game, big time.

Trip report?

Crowded, closed out, scary.

I made one wave in four days. Caught 10 at most.
Duffy did you bring proper semi gun/gun:shrug: I could not imagine trying to surf wave like this now but at 18 prime of my life scored pascuales with proper semi gun shaped by Dave Johnson after another crew went Summer before us. We scored but paid heavy price of beat downs, montezuma's revenge, and snapped board(s):drowning:

I brought an 8’6 Padilac. That’s it.

Surfed Puerto probably 20 trips between age 17 and 37. Rode 9'0" - 6'6". Lots of waves on a beefy 6'10' pintail single fin back in the day. Coming out of the barrel always just a bonus. I'm sure it pretty much sux now.
Curious - what's the draw?

Being a notorious closeout/surf porn wave I've always wondered this.

There are so many better waves on the planet - of all the waves to put you in a wheelchair or kill you - that's the one to choose?

Always seems like a lot of guys from TX and FL love it.

It really depends on your cup of tea. But a few things that come to mind are challenging, beautiful, close, cheap, and rewarding. I spent two weeks there quite a while ago. It took me those entire two weeks to even start to figure it out but I definitely got a handful of waves and made a decent number of them. Sure, I'd rather to go Nias but I can't get to Nias on a whim and work from there for two weeks while just surfing in the morning. I can't even do that in Salina Cruz because that's not how the camps work.

Used to watch Dave Ogle's Puerto Underground vids for froth value -- even back then, in great shape and surfing at what I felt was a pretty high level, the sheer knar factor and concern for the well-being of my beloved and sacred gunny boards kept me from ever booking a trip .

Challege and some like me love beach breaks and reefs more then point breaks but its a young mans game @kool-aid gets plenty of practice since SFOB is his home break. I have never been to PE but seems like on the non XXL days TOH breaks closer to shore then say pascuales did or a least in '89. I remember 3 a frame peaks "left, center, right" all spread out 25 yards apart so when center peak had first set you paddle like life depends on it for right peak hoping you make it out on time:drowning: To this day still most challenging wave ever surfed after 42 years:cheers:

Not that many places you can paddle out and encounter waves with massive, puking spit. When you get in there with that massive, puking spit, when you slide into that room, when you set up in that cave and look out that almond eye... when that thing breathes and you emerge into the light, wearing just baggies, on your trusty 7'6" gun... I mean there's stoked and then there's nirvana
