The Bar
honestly, it's become a little mantra of mine. especially since I had my son. with what little free time I have, if it ain't fook yeah it's fook no. which one of you said it? @ghostshaper @retodd, I can't remember.
That's the part no one tells you about kids is the sudden lack of free time and it gets worse, not better!

The other way that mantra works too is that stuff you might normally have been mehhh on becomes fuck yeah because now or never and time is precious.

If it's any consolation...one of the local LA County beaches seems to have gotten ruined by the big surf this winter. I think the swells dug a trench just inside the outer bar. Now the bar closes out at low tide, backs off at medium tide and doesn't break at high tide. It's just a big version of the photo Shark Biscuit posted.

On the other hand....another beach that has been dormant for the last two or three years has come alive and has offered really fun waves all Spring. Still in the 4/3 though...

Can you get your house under the Observatory back?

haha, yeah you better pick up your fishing game or shark teeth hunting is good on these days, but flatness is a thing in FL in summer.
For good surf just travel in those months. Look into Rincon area of PR, a lot of FL guys hit DR or Nica. A few even started surf resorts in Nica and PR. You're close to the airport so at least you don't have a long drive to start the surf trip.
You'll have to drive a little bit but you're close to good surf spots when the hurricanes start rolling. Only down side is you may have been surfing dinky knee high waves for a month then you get 2-3 days of way overhead and mostly closing out.

I am admittedly struggling to like it here in FL - Gonna ride it out for a while longer - are there ever waves here - FU$K.
I admit I haven't read most of this thread and I would never, ever, ever move to fucking Florida, but you're there now so.... didn't you say your compensation is north of 400K a year? Don't you get time off? Book trips, strike missions to sick spots and score, then go back and pay the bills. Rinse and repeat.

Then, before you know it, the kids are teenagers and you're 'old' to them and they move on without you and suddenly you have a whole sh!t ton of time to yourself again. Yeah, you're older, but it's nice having free time to do whatever the fuck you want again. Haha.

My nephew moved to Florida, I asked him one thing when I'd heard of this, "WHY?".

He's found happiness in W. Palm.

My best buddy sold his garage in Santa Cruz, CA. And moved to Florida as well, same question.

WHY?

He too found happiness in W. Palm.

When my mom moved there, I told her straight up... not visiting.

It's not that I don't like Florida, I've been. Many times. Many benders. Many crazy nights. Many rented Cadillacs, mostly convertible El D's.

It's just that, well, you know that scene where Lebowski is told, after receiving the coffee mug upside the head to not come back to Malibu after leaving? Well a certain Florida Sherriff invited me to do the same thing, only promising that if I EVER entered the state again, he'd personally see me tarred, feathered and hung by my genitalia. All this at shotgun point....

He did NOT take kindly to my deflowering his daughter.

:roflmao::roflmao:

Banned from Florida!

Is this the one with the face tattoo pornstar "girlfriend"?

If so, I get it. They'll fit in well.

Santa Cruz ----> West Palm Beach

What a stark contrast, it almost seems like punishment.

8 years in that hot, sticky, flat hellhole was enough for my liking.

Lots of very good or very bad jobs you're not getting much vacation up front. It sounds like his employer is in the sweat equity phase, not the 3 day weekends and flextime phase.

I'd look into Jamaica if you can get out of the office by 3:15 or so on a Friday. You could fly out that afternoon, surf all day Saturday, and get a surf in Sunday morning.
Spirit's times to Aguadilla look okay, but the season is winding down.

The other logistically possible options for M-F 8-5 schedule are domestic. Waco pool, SF, LAX, LaGuardia, and Logan. Maybe Portland or Seattle but I dunno.

Spirit is kind of notorious for being a pain in the ass. Can't go to Puerto Rico? Just go to Ponce Inlet, hassle for some rights, get burned, and have people in the way, stick some urchin spines in your feet, break your window, and toss your sh!t in the trash. The logistics to Central America are sort of rough for a Sat/Sun trip. Playa Hermosa could be out of reach. Instead, go to El Porto in trunks. Crush habanero pepper seeds and mix with icy hot. Smear liberally all over body, especially bottom of feet and inner thigh/ass/ballsack/schlong, then pack two dozen closeouts and call it a day. Nicaragua's beachbreaks likewise are an inconvenient flight time and two hour drive away. In lieu of Nica, go to New Smyrna or Jax Beach Pier. Not quite as schizophrenically tide sensitive, but a dead ringer for the crowd.

Much easier said than done if you're not a pro surfer with connections.

The tide thing was kind of a bummer in North Nica for me, at least where I stayed it was high tide only. Left a lot of time to kill in the heat.

I was under the impression there were some panga/lancha-accessed lefts kind of South and out the back that like low tide?
The one we surfed was high tide only and crowded with both camps. There are supposedly some more mysto waves that were not working during my stay, Perhaps they are bit fickle because there was plenty of swell.

He’s right. Miami to managua in 3 hours for a few hundred bucks. $150 at the gate usually puts you in first class and there in time for an afternoon surf, basically anywhere in the country. Love it or hate it, Surfline’s long term swell calls for every single one of my nica trips has been scary accurate, even 10 days out

rincon PR is also flat in summer. That’s a winter spot, and very swell dependent. Even in winter, unless there is a real swell from up north, it will be flat. There are, however, swell events in the North Atlantic nearly every week during the fall winter and early spring.

Florida has a ton of Beach but the surfing there is just not a thing, and I grew up in New York. shark snacks makes the best of it and has things dialed in like the rain man that he is, but he will be the first to tell you Florida has longer and more thorough flat spells than even the north east

take long weekends when you see a swell forecast get above 4-5 feet for nica or northern CR (into Liberia is super easy) jump on a plane. I need to do that more, and you‘re several hours close by already being in Miami

If he can take long weekends on relatively short notice four months into a new job. If that's not a possibility, and it's basically 8-5 M-F, it's a lot of money for a Saturday PM and Sunday AM surf.

Another option for well-heeled weekend warriors in Miami with better Summer swell than the ones under discussion. Peru. There's red eyes to/fro so you'd get two full days, Lima is right on the coast and Punta Hermosa's 45 minutes away. There will be less swell decay and zero Galapagos problems, and Saturday is the only hotel night.

I dawn patrol this place every Sat and Sunday Morning - best wave in Florida and all I have found to do here on the weekend - we are in start up mode so days off are not possible right now. I work most weekend as well right now. I have enough to retire now - I keep asking myself why? on the positive we are building a pretty cool business. I love to build things - just wish it was in CA and not here.

I think it was recently surfable on the Gulf side. Need to give that a try. ^^^ FL needs more skateparks. Take away the injury-factor, the overall vibe of skating is so much better than surfing
