I will be interested to know what you think of the Vicco weather. If you are heading to the Surf Coast (very unoriginal, but official name for the Torquay, Bells region) you should get good wind conditions next week (NW, which is ideal). I don't surf that stretch of coast anymore.

I can handle that sort of weather for short periods of time but not sure I'd want to make it my regular. The cloudiness, rain and wind seems kinda miserable long term.

From driving the coast road in Vic my impression is the waves would be more similar to CA waves but higher quality.

Unfortunately had to return to the USA before the conditions were to get good.

A good comparison is the winter weather in Santa Cruz CA - except we don't get a consistent prevailing wind - get weather patterns which last a few days - sometimes more and a lot less fog. July/August are great months for the surf coast - a week of cold rainy onshore winds and bumpy surf followed by say a week of offshore winds and great well groomed surf would be typical. The offshore wind also cold, but a bit less rainy - although definitely can't count on that mix, making say a 2 week trip a bit hit and miss.

The "coast road" you talk of - I assume that's the Great Ocean Road heading west out of Melbourne - once one drives around Cape Otway - the weather takes a turn for the worse!

All that aside, it sucks to be back.

Kinda milling over the idea of immigrating.

Permanent resident visa is pretty damn easy for someone with my skillset.

Wife too.

Areas outside the big cities would entitle me to a tasty relocation allowance.

It was a real struggle for me to get here.

Started as a pipe dream in 2008 with many doors shut in front of me. I finally got my visa in 2015, packed all my sh!t within the space of 2 months and moved the whole family, including the dog, at the start of 2016.

Nowhere on earth is perfect, but this is as close as it gets for me.

real estate pricy.
Yea, it's pretty wild. This isn't a 'humble brag' - as it means nothing financially, but I got extremely lucky with buying my house. Got here in 2016 and within 3 months bought my house.

Everyone was telling me to wait and see where I want to live but having been a migrant for the entire of my adult life, I was just emotionally ready to own something. Within a year of owning it, the price had gone up so much I wouldn't have been able to afford my own home if I had bought it later.

Real estate is probably ok on the NSW south coast I am assuming?

From the Northern Rivers up to the Sunny Coast you can just about forget it now.

Anything on the east coast that's close to the water is expensive - even down as far as Eden, although it's better the further away you are from a major city. And the crazy thing is, it just keeps going up. I haven't seen a lag in real estate prices for ten years. The whole covid remote work thing really saw those small beachside towns explode. Bendy, Ulladulla, Batemans, Sapphire Coast - you can get decent coffee in all those places now - it's a telltale sign.

That said, bargains come up and it's worth it. I would never move back to Sydney or its outer suburbs.

A little late but...
Wife and I were there years ago for 2 weeks July 3-18.
Drove the whole E. Coast starting in Sydney.
Windy AF in NSW, not much surf (it is beginning of winter)
Started calming down around Coff's and a little windsurf started showing, nothing to write home about.
Any surf disappeared around Fraser Island but weather turned epic, not too hot/humid, cool nights.
Lots to see/do outside of surfing. Still, one of the top places we've visited around the world.
