they repealed the fairness doctrine and the media went from a source of information to a source of reinforcement at the expense of ongoing public discourse on the issues that matter to us and our families

we have so many big fish to fry, but we're wasting cycles on trivia

there's no more "national conversation"

we have a backlog of real serious sh!t that needs to be addressed that actually require a back and forth discussion at the level of the individual citizen to learn about the subject and weigh out the pros and cons in pursuit of robust solutions....

Things are def getting worse. We are reverting back to our tribal roots. It is becoming less and less common that people interact with anyone who thinks differently than themselves, and more and more common that people view those who think differently as evil enemies.

This trend has been growing for decades, since the craziness of the race riots and antiwar protests of the 60s. It got worse with cable TV in the 80s and 90s and now social media has in the last 10 or 15 years really poured gasoline on the fire. Our brains are being trained to reinforce our inner tribalism and despise those who are different than us.

Don't mistake a vocal crowd for a growing crowd. If you look how the youngest generation voted in November, it's not for the tiki torch side.

I think there's a certain portion of the woke agenda that bothers almost everyone. But there's also a part that resonates. There's definitely still racism, but I don't see the kids being as bothered by race. I also see them way less bothered by/concerned with trans issues than their parents.

I'm 61 and I know way more now.

It does me no good but understanding how our visceral states influence decision making was the key for me to understanding human behavior.

Also, life is complicated.

Creating simplified representations of relevant features within a complex domain can be very helpful but you need to be a aware that you are simplifying.

Also, technology cuts us off from nature.

This is a knife that cuts both ways.

Don't mistake a vocal crowd for a growing crowd. If you look how the youngest generation voted in November, it's not for the tiki torch side.

I think there's a certain portion of the woke agenda that bothers almost everyone. But there's also a part that resonates. There's definitely still racism, but I don't see the kids being as bothered by race. I also see them way less bothered by/concerned with trans issues than their parents.

My 18 year olds were super cool and hard working this semester.

I'm sure they were all down with being tollerant with others

But they were not overly woke

They laughed at all my taboo humor
