In the conservative mindset they are not unrelated. Sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc. are all lumped together as the main hot-button trigger issue, especially when progressives rail against them as being immoral, bigoted, and out of touch with their traditional values and morals.

It's not a slippery slope so much as dinosaurs going where they belong - into the ground. People who think like this are dying at a very rapid rate, and people who think this is retarded are replacing them. Everybody wins!
