What are your goals?

I would get a classical guitar and learn on that.

Learn the D, G ,and C cords first and start struming.

I'd start with learning the fretboard, maybe just to the 5th fret (first position), and understand that it repeats itself at the 12th fret so you can apply the same stuff you play down there, up there.
Basic chord structure/chart and common chord progressions.
At the same time (to make it fun) learn some intros, riffs and songs you like on YT tutorials and link above.
Don't waste money on tab books.
Lessons from a good instructor will accelerate your learning and prevent bad habits from forming.

What is your ability level?

Can you do a C major scale with both hands?

You just need to do that for a year(s) to groove the pattern into your nervous system.

It's boring at first and then it gets addictive.

Just the easy ones, C, A, G, E, D, and kind of stumbling through a Blink 182 tab book, and old surf guitar one I picked up.

Find a teacher whose style you want to learn and take some lessons. There is a lot of stuff on youtube but having someone see what you are doing and correct it will likely save you a lot of time. Bad habits and bad technique can be difficult to reverse. It's important to study with someone who plays the stuff you want to learn well. Find the very best player you can, even though you are a beginner. There are many so so players who teach, who really shouldn't.
