To Be Frank explores authenticity and community in surfing via Frank Paine, a 73-year-old South Bay icon and humble local legend whose life orbits around a two-block stretch of beach. His unforgettable mustache and magnetic spirit are what most first notice, but Frank’s deeper layers expose a depth that might answer some questions that us surfers continually ask ourselves. Surfing, which, for some, becomes lost in isolation, is made whole again with Frank — welcoming, inspiring, kind and committed, with an unwavering passion centered on and springing from Hermosa Beach’s beloved shores.

Very bummed! Brian became a good friend from the LeRoy Grannis Paddleout and from phone calls when we'd chat.I stayed with Brian and his wife Robyn later, after the Grannis paddle out. I was hoping to go to another friend's paddle-out in Hermosa, on June 3rd but now, I won't be able to attend. Friends are leaving the revolving marble quicker nowadays. Just how it is.

Hey now ..... buttMan. :waving: HowZit!

Done.

It's been there at 2nd street forever. I remember a girl I knew got a job there while we were in high school...in the 70's. I'm not a vegan so I only went there a couple times but it's sad to see long time small businesses close.

Damn, When I was a student at Hermosa Valley Middle School in the 80's, There were kids who's parents worked there.
Back in the days when you could raise a family in Hermosa from the income generated waiting tables.

That "back in the day" sentiment could be applied to anywhere nice. The house my mom bought in the emerald city in 1971 for $31K ($232K in today's dollars) is now worth >$3M, according to Zillow.

Yup. My parents bought a house in Palos Verdes in 1962 for $26K. Last I checked it was worth 2 million. Pretty typical 60's stucco box...with a killer view. Just to the left of the palm trees in the distance is the infamous Lunada Bay.

Exactly.
I couldn't even afford the neighborhood I live in now.
I paid $280k in 2000. Recently appraised at $1.4M.

Hoping to be able to plan a weekend at our friends in Hermosa Beach this summer. Will never forget the sessions I had during a hot July years ago with some fun consistent 3'-4' rolling in south of the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Do you guys enjoy Mickey's Deli? I remember having both one of their subs and also their pizza and they were both pretty great! Good memories, glad to see it's still there.

I got sandwiches there a few times. Just down the street was "Second St. Cafe." They had a patio that was nice and sunny in the morning and it was my favorite post surf breakfast place until it was torn down... to make another mansion.

Never mind, just realized it was Second St. Cafe that was thorn down. That sucks but I'm kinda relieved I'll get the opportunity for a nostalgia trip.

Worst summer ever in the South Bay? Any other South Bayers have an opinion?

It seems the winter swells dug a deep trench and anything less than head high (at minus low tide) does not break until it reaches the shorepound. I've only surfed twice this month and only four times in July. I could drive an hour north to surf waist high Malibu with 75 of my best friends, or drive an hour south to surf waist high, crumbly Huntington...but I don't. I can't really call myself a surfer anymore.

:(....
