Driving conditions even during big events usually isn't too awful. I've never felt the need for ground clearance and an AWD sedan with good snow tires will get you through, same with chains on front wheel drive IMHO. Cottonwoods, especially LCC can get a bit dicey on major storms but usually it's the jokers with bald all season tires that think their "trucks" are a panacea in slippery conditions that cause issues. The dreaded "red snake" of taillights leaving the resorts during a storm after the lifts close are usually caused by simple buffoonery.
Unless your 4x4 can lock the hubs both front and back I woul think twice about chaining the fronts.

Also with 4x4s NEVER chain front only.

Never had an issue with the wifeys Honda CRV AWD. Does great in the snow. Clearance Clarence however she pulled s little deep in a driveway once and sunk the front end down. I pulled her out. I pull a lot of people out. This year I might in my F250 join the folks driving around pulling people out. $50

I prefer AWD cars with snow tires over SUVs or trucks. I like the lower center of gravity. Subaru's are standard issue in UT and CO, although I loved having a BMW with dedicated snow tires to make the mountain passes "boring" in the best way possible.
super gummy and siped snow tires are such a game changer

My son's first shred movie premiered in town on Friday - two sold out shows with gear tosses and raffles and the locals were hyped. Great way to get the season started. He wasn't able to fully dedicate to the project last winter as he was often out of town training / competing in halfpipe but his friends kept him involved when he was around and he came away with some sick clips that came together for a pretty rad little part. Super stoked for him.

Winter is coming! Can't wait!

We've had our Subaru Outback for 2 years now, we ski every weekend December thru March. Me, wifey, kiddo, dawg, roof box full of gear. It's great for our small family. Turbo helps keep power at elevation.

Just put the winter tires back on. I put a set of Nokian WRG4's on the stock wheels - they're "all-weather" tires that handle almost as well as snow tires. Heavily siped, excellent traction and great grip in cold rainy conditions like we see in the PNW all winter.

I prefer to drive the Subaru on ski trips compared to my 2020 F250.

I was a retired school teacher and had a Prius that had the best snow tires and with chains that never kept me from years of riding 100 days. Surf trips on the reg to So Cal was the only thing that did.
