An avalanche at Lee Canyon NV. just caught 4 people. It would appear to be getting serious out here in the West.

This is where my wife grew up on the ski team and later snowboarding. We really like it there, but it is set up as a bit of a funnel in the canyon behind Lee Peak / Mt. Charleston so I could see a serious avalanche happening there even though it's pretty low pitch down on the actual resort runs.

Got a good workout in td. Severe lack of motivation due to anticipated crowd scene, storm not delivering, and being old and in bad shape along with it being really fucking cold this am meant a late start and tracked out conditions for the most part.

just after these pics found two cats smoking a joint mid run adjacent to a fall line/very steep tree lined gully/chute I got to fuck around with the end of along with the mini spine ridge next to it. Felt like some pretty tech riding/shredding for a minute and was outrageously fun terrain. Mental not was made of its local and I’ll nail down exactly where on FATMAP bc I have to ride it again. The danger level was perfect along with it def holding snow.

Family surgical strike and done to perfection. Left mid-morning Sunday, got to the mountain at about 2 PM. Watched a ton of people coming down the hill while we were on the way up which was immensely satisfying. To be sure we were not the only ones with this idea but we still got front and center parking and got a dozen+ runs in. No lines, minimal people, mountain pretty much wide open. It was like Kirkwood used to be back in the day, just chill as can be.

Rode most of the day today, took our time of it in the morning. Not as good parking but pretty close. Snow was still a little crusty so wasn't tripping on getting there early. Mountain was empty and we all got dozens of runs in. Combo of speed runs and jump runs. My son likes to go very fast and him doing jujitsu the last several months has been pretty huge for his core strength but that kid needs to learn some technique. Strength will only take you so far.

I wish my son had the opportunity to surf with Shaun Tomson because I have no idea who would out-snake who.

We're milling about 50 feet outside the lift entry waiting for my wife come down as we took a more direct route and this german/swede/wtfk woman skis right up to us and starts yelling at my son in this thick Euro accent. I thought at first this is because she had some perception we were clogging up the lift line but then it's something about him going in front of her daughter in the park and making her slow down and not get as much air as she could have gotten.

That kind of irked me - if you have a beef with something one of my kids did and I'm standing right there, you talk to me about it, don't yell at a 9 year old. Aside from that, I laughed. I had to even think of what she was talking about but yes, my son is horribly ruthless when he smells hesitation. I mean, I'm no park rat but even I know that just because you're first in line does not mean you're first in line and if you sorta linger without imminent movement, you're gonna get snaked. I also know that it's in the tens of thousands if not more how many people have gotten and made me slow down or skip a jump - it's life; get it 10 minutes later. And it's the mini-park of all things for crying out loud. The funny thing is my daughter is no better. At least they go fast and stick every landing so there's that but had a chat with them about maybe giving a one, one-thousand, two, one-thous... ok that's enough just go. :roflmao:

Fun trip overall but that was just odd. Oh well, I know that as soon as they know how to really do hard hockey-stops to truly send snow, the gripes will truly file in. Multi-generational inflictions of trauma on an unprepared populace - alas. :roflmao:

Solid video and a lot of great points. 100% correct about it keeping your sh!t quick and consistent. One turn too much on your back foot, back arm drop, any element of laziness and you're done. My goal is to do whole mogul line, top of lift to bottom, single fall line, no stops. Sometimes I'm successful.

Cool thing is I found trailrunning downhill has an awful lot of similarities to skiing/boarding moguls. Have to be really nimble. Also the result of doing that 21 miler on Saturday is that I still have a sore ass/hip from that log I slammed onto (it's the standing up that actually hurts), blood blisters under both big toenails, and dozens of superficial nicks and cuts all over. None of them particularly terrible but added all up, I wasn't doing any moguls the next two days.

And nor would I want to with that BSOD. Holy sh!t that board has no business at all doing tiny short radius turns. Like taking a Padillac to Lowers.

But what works for moguls is a shorter board, about 4-6 cm shorter than normal freeride board, minimal stiffness in that board, and it's gotta be quick edge-to-edge. And if you really want to have fun in spring when it's nice and slushy, detune the edges a bit. I mean, a little bit of bite but not much. Enough to send buckets down the hill, which is half the fun of further spaced moguls, but not so much you can't ride out of without sliding down half the hill. :roflmao:

I was going down the road off 14 and this boarder ape was up off the trail wanting to get around and hop over the trail into the bowl. I see him out of yhe corner of my eye but I dgaf. He cant get enough speed to get in front of me but doesn't want to slow down. I can tell he is looking at me in my lane wanting to jump across and he yells like “Go” or something and I yell back “ you go!” Im not gonna ski in a way to make room for someone else on Mammoths backside. Go around. If you cant then cut under. Im stubborn. Especially when it comes to knuckle dragging gays on trays who haven't put the time in to learn to ski. Go have another shot of Fireball in pkng lot of Chair 2!

Anyways… my nephew hurts people sometime. He is 11. He is so oblivious. He goes to fast in the slow areas. Just doing his own thing. Hes not an ssshole. He just doesnt think about others. He takes out old men primarily. His Mom is so proud when the Ski Patrol tells him to slow down. Wtf? At least he is on skis.

I would have passed you, and sent some wind driven snow off the cattrack for the wind to catch and blow right back in your face. :monkey:

Skiing-wise, I really wish they wouldn't teach the snowplow, it's the equivalent of the falling leaf. You spend the next several years (at least) breaking a lazy habit that shouldn't have been taught in the first place. Assuming you have decent athleticism, take out the snowplow, the learning curve for skiing/snowboarding starts to get pretty close, matter of days to get past the intermediate rut. And speaking of which, I found this was an outstanding book when I used to ski.

Love it. Talk about putting in the work during the offseason and that upper body is dead silent as he's going downhill. That's why he is one of the all-time best.
